An asset can appear in an exchange account while part of it is unavailable for withdrawal because an open order reserves it. That is only one possible explanation. Reconcile the order quantities and fills first, then check funding holds, product obligations and withdrawal requirements instead of canceling instructions at random.
No fees or other holds in this example. Available for trading and available for withdrawal can differ in a real account.
BTKWIN.COM · EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLECompare balances for the same use and unit
A total balance and an available balance answer different questions. Availability can refer to new trades, withdrawals or internal transfers, each subject to the service’s rules. A portfolio valuation in a local currency is also different from the number of units held in one token. Record the field name and currency before comparing figures.
The Kraken withdrawal troubleshooting guide identifies assets committed to open or pending orders as one possible cause of withdrawal difficulty. Use an order-based explanation when it matches the records, while keeping other restrictions in view. Canceling every order is not a general diagnostic method for all unavailable funds.
Example: 1,000 total and 600 committed to a purchase
Assume a hypothetical spot account holds 1,000 quote-currency units. An unfilled purchase requires 600, and our model includes no fees, additional holds or other obligations. The total remains 1,000, of which 600 is reserved and 400 is available. Reserved money has not yet bought an asset, but it supports an instruction that can execute.
Trying to withdraw 500 while keeping the 600 commitment creates a conflict in this model: the two uses would require 1,100. This arithmetic does not make a new deposit the required solution. Review whether the purchase instruction remains intended, then act on the actual account conditions and your chosen purpose.
| Hypothetical state | Total quote balance | Reserved | Available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before the order | 1,000 | 0 | 1,000 |
| 600-value order open | 1,000 | 600 | 400 |
| Entirely canceled without fills | 1,000 | 0 | 1,000 |
Actual reservation calculations can include a fee allowance or other requirements. Sum the relevant reservations across pairs and compare contemporaneous records within the same product. A balance read before a new fill cannot be expected to match an order list read afterward. Record times when the market is actively executing your instructions.
A partial purchase changes what cancellation can release
Suppose the 600-value order executes purchases worth 180 and leaves a raw value of 420 reserved for its remainder. Ignoring fees, the quote-currency balance is now 820: 420 reserved and 400 available. You also hold the newly purchased asset. If the remaining order is successfully canceled without further fills, available quote currency becomes 820, not 1,000.
The 180 difference was spent in an executed purchase. Cancellation stops the unfilled part according to the product’s rules; it does not reverse completed trades. Labeling that entire difference as a fee would misclassify the value of the asset received. Open the fills and match asset quantities added against quote-currency spending.
A portfolio total may still include the new asset converted to a valuation currency. That is a changing estimate rather than cash held in the original quote currency. Do not assume the displayed total can all be withdrawn as one asset without conversion. Understand the components before considering a separate trade and its costs.
A sell order reserves asset units instead
Assume you hold ten token units and place an open sale for six. Under a simple reservation model, four may remain available for token withdrawal while total holdings are still ten before execution. A change in the token’s market price affects valuation without releasing those six reserved units.
If two units sell before cancellation, you then hold eight token units plus sale proceeds. Canceling the four still requested for sale may release those four from the order commitment, leaving eight available from this reservation perspective. It cannot restore the two already sold. Other withdrawal rules can still restrict the eight.
Track the token and the currency of the proceeds in their own balance rows. Searching for sold units in the token balance creates a false discrepancy. The partial-fill guide explains how to distinguish executed quantity, active remainder and the value received.
Recognize restrictions that order cancellation cannot resolve
A service can permit some trading while restricting external transfers associated with a funding method or account condition. The Coinbase available-balance guidance distinguishes availability for transfers from other account activity. If the message identifies a funding hold, canceling an order does not establish that the separate hold has ended.
The Kraken hold explanation provides another product-specific source. Read the reason and time shown for your account instead of applying a remembered duration universally. Interpret any deadline in the timezone supplied by the service.
Also identify whether the assets are in a different product or support obligations beyond an unfilled spot order. Collateral for an existing position should not be treated as a simple purchase reservation. Determine the product and documented consequences before changing a position merely to experiment with withdrawal availability.
Then check withdrawal amount, fees and destination
If order availability is sufficient, examine the withdrawal minimum, fee currency and selected network. An amount that can be traded may still fall below the withdrawal minimum. Entering the whole balance can also fail if the product requires an additional deduction from that balance. Read the preview’s gross debit and expected net receipt.
The transfer fee calculator helps isolate those costs. Use the transfer helper to distinguish an instruction still inside an exchange from a transaction broadcast to a network. Sending gas to an unrelated external wallet does not prove it will release a reserved balance held by the exchange.
Verify that the destination supports the actual asset and network and any required memo or tag. Releasing funds addresses only availability. It does not establish recipient compatibility or prove an eventual deposit has been credited. The wallet helper can support a separate review of custody requirements.
Reconcile before requesting support
- Identify the asset and exact withdrawal amount, with units.
- Record total, reserved and available balances at a comparable time.
- Match reservations against confirmed open-order remainders.
- Check fills before explaining any difference after cancellation.
- Review funding, security and product restrictions if orders do not explain it.
- Confirm withdrawal minimum, fees, network and final request status.
For support, provide the error text, relevant order identifier, attempted amount, cancellation time and confirmed fills. Use the service’s official support channel and redact secrets. Recovery words, passwords or private keys are not evidence required to explain an open-order reservation. A request from an unrelated party to transfer funds to its address should not be treated as a normal release mechanism.
The disappearance of a reservation establishes only that this particular commitment ended according to the account records. It does not prove every withdrawal condition has passed or that an external deposit arrived. Follow the stages in order: available balance, accepted withdrawal, network transaction when applicable, then destination credit.
