Partial execution means some requested quantity traded while another portion remains unfilled or ended under the order’s conditions. Calculate from actual fills and their fees, not desired quantity or the latest market price. Cancelling the open remainder does not reverse completed trades, and quantities can change before cancellation is accepted.
The weighted fill price is 100.4, not the simple average of the two prices.
BTKWIN.COM · EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLEIdentify pair, side and quantity unit
Establish base asset, quote currency and whether the order buys or sells. Quantity can mean units of the base asset while notional value means quantity times price. A reserved quote balance is not proof that all requested base quantity was acquired.
This article uses spot-style asset fills. A derivative can have contract size, margin and settlement conventions requiring a different model. Read the actual product rather than copying a spot calculation to every trading screen.
Match fills to their order ID, not merely the same pair. Several orders can exist simultaneously. Keep accepted time, original requested quantity and instructions so the calculation describes one defined request.
Separate three quantities
Original quantity is what the order requested. Executed quantity is the sum of actual fills. Remaining quantity is what has not executed in the state being inspected. A final cancelled status does not make original quantity fully executed or erase previously filled quantity.
Binance’s state definitions illustrate why status and quantities are read together. A request rejected from the beginning differs from cancellation after partial execution.
The arithmetic remainder also does not establish whether it remains open. Time-in-force and the service’s current state determine what happens next. Recheck after any cancellation or amendment rather than relying on a remembered snapshot.
An illustrative quantity record
| Field | Example units | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Original | 10 | Requested at creation |
| Executed | 5 | Actual fills so far |
| Unfilled | 5 | Not acquired through these fills |
| Net holdings | May be below 5 | Depends on fee asset and deductions |
Five units filled at two prices
For a hypothetical ten-unit buy, three execute at 100 and two at 101. Notional value is three times 100 plus two times 101, or 502 quote units. That does not mean ten were bought, or five all bought at 101.
Weighted average fill price is 502 divided by five, or 100.4. A simple average of 100 and 101 gives 100.5 because it ignores unequal quantities.
When another fill arrives, recompute total value divided by total quantity. Do not average the previous average and new price equally unless their associated quantities are actually equal. These prices are teaching values, not current quotes.
For a sell, value is proceeds before fees
The same sum of quantity times price describes execution value, but its economic direction differs. For a purchase it contributes to cost; for a sell it describes pre-fee proceeds.
Do not call that amount profit without acquisition cost, fees and a defined accounting scope. Actual fills answer how much of this order traded, not every performance question about the position.
Our average purchase cost tool can organize suitable buy fills with fee treatment. Keep unfilled requests and unrelated account activity outside that calculation.
Record fees in their actual currency
Assume an educational 0.1% fee in quote currency on the two fills. The charges are 0.3 and 0.202, totaling 0.502. Purchase cost becomes 502.502 for five units, giving a fee-inclusive cost average of 100.5004.
If instead the same illustrative percentage is deducted from base quantity, total deduction can be 0.005 units, leaving 4.995. The fill-price average and net-holdings cost need distinct denominators.
A third-asset fee requires its own quantity and appropriate valuation rather than direct subtraction across currencies. Binance’s commission documentation illustrates account and execution-specific details. Use actual fill charges rather than assuming a fixed full-order fee repeats on every row.
Reserved funds are not completed purchases
A service can reserve funds for an open remainder and anticipated charges. Available balance can decline before the full target trades. Compare total, available and reserved amounts using actual product definitions.
Do not classify the whole difference as a fee or loss. Inspect open orders and fills. Closing the trading page does not necessarily cancel the reserved request or restore availability.
A partially acquired asset may also fail a later withdrawal or deposit minimum after fees. Trading, withdrawal and recipient credit need separate actual quantities and conditions.
Reconcile the final result after cancelling
Suppose five units were filled when you clicked cancel, but another one traded before acceptance. Final executed quantity is six and cancelled remainder four under that example.
Placing another five-unit order based on the old view could exceed the ten-unit target. Use final accepted state and recent fills to calculate any remaining desired quantity, rather than treating a submitted cancellation as a market freeze.
Cancelling the remainder does not automatically return commissions on completed trades. Selling the acquired quantity is a new order with its own price, fees and risk, not retroactive cancellation of the purchase.
Time-in-force changes remainder behavior
Some instructions leave an unfilled remainder open; others attempt immediate execution then end the rest, or impose complete immediate execution under their rules. Review the actual venue’s GTC, IOC or FOK behavior where offered.
Price or quantity amendments can also affect priority or create a different request depending on the supported function. Preserve the resulting reference and instructions rather than assuming every earlier property remains.
Our unfilled limit-order guide explains those diagnostic branches. A partial fill alone is not proof of a system fault; it may reflect available quantity and the selected instructions.
Keep a reviewable fill record
Store order ID, pair, side, original quantity and time-in-force, then associated fill quantity, price, value, role, fee and fee asset. Calculate executed and net amounts separately.
After modification or cancellation, refresh state before another request. Retain an observation time so an old partial count does not appear final. For support, send the relevant record through official channels without account passwords or API secrets.
If the issue instead concerns moving acquired assets to another wallet, our help tool addresses that route. An order’s completed or partial state is evidence about trading, not proof of subsequent on-chain delivery.
