How the position size is estimated

Enter your available capital, the percentage you choose to risk, an entry price and a lower stop price. Add the trading fee charged on each side. This tool models a long purchase funded with available cash, with no leverage. It caps the purchase amount, including entry fees, at your available capital.

The risk budget is capital × risk percentage. Estimated risk per unit is entry price − stop price, plus the entry and stop-exit fees. The preliminary quantity is risk budget ÷ risk per unit. If buying that quantity would exceed your capital, the calculator reduces it to the cash-funded maximum and displays a notice.

Worked example with trading fees

For capital of 10,000, a chosen risk budget of 1%, an entry of 100, a stop of 95 and a 0.1% fee on each side, the cash risk budget is 100. Risk per unit is 5 + 0.1 + 0.095 = 5.195. The estimated position is approximately 19.249278 units.

The purchase needs about 1,926.85 including the entry fee. If the assumed exit occurs exactly at 95 with the entered fee, the estimated loss is 100. “Try an example” loads these figures. The 1% input is an example, not a recommended risk level.

A stop price is an assumption

A stop order does not guarantee an execution price. Gaps, thin liquidity, fast price moves, order type and platform behaviour can produce a different outcome. The figure labelled estimated stop loss is a calculation at your input price, not a maximum possible loss or a promise that the order will execute.

CME Group explains the relationship between stop distance and position size. Apply any example only after checking the mechanics, fee rules and order limitations of the instrument you actually use.

What this calculator does not model

Short positions, futures, margin, liquidation, overnight financing, funding rates, variable exit fees and portfolio-wide exposure are outside this model. It does not select an entry, choose a stop or assess whether a trade is suitable for you.

For a long purchase the stop must be lower than the entry, and both prices must be positive. The risk percentage must be above zero and at most 100%. The tool accepts valid numbers within its calculation range and reports invalid inputs instead of silently assuming a value. Your inputs are not stored or sent to an exchange.
