Rejected Trading Order: Minimum Value, Quantity Steps and Price Ticks

An order can be rejected despite sufficient funds because its quantity, price, value or supported options do not satisfy the market’s rules. Record the exact rejection before changing anything. These hypothetical examples separate the checks so a precision error does not lead to an unintended larger purchase.

Three independent checks
QuantityMinimum, maximum and allowed step
PriceAllowed range and tick
ValuePrice × quantity under the relevant rule

Passing one check does not establish that the complete order will be accepted or filled.

First distinguish rejection from a missing response

Save the message, error code, attempted pair, order type and time. A documented rejection describes a response from the system; a connection failure may mean that you do not know whether the server accepted the request. For the latter, inspect order history before resubmitting so a missing confirmation does not produce a duplicate order.

The Kraken error reference separates categories such as authentication and order validation. Use the current explanation for the actual service. A quantity-step error does not automatically indicate a disabled account, and depositing more funds does not change an invalid numerical increment. Start with the condition identified by the response.

Give each number a unit and a purpose

Price expresses quote-currency cost per unit of the base asset. Quantity expresses base-asset units. For a simple limit-order example, notional value is their product. An increment describes allowed changes to a field, whereas a minimum describes a lower bound. A valid order may need to satisfy both, along with additional product rules.

CheckQuestionHypothetical requirement
Minimum quantityAre there enough base units? At least 0.5
Quantity stepIs the amount on an allowed increment?Multiples of 0.1
Price tickIs the price on an allowed increment?Multiples of 0.05
Minimum valueIs price × quantity sufficient? At least 10 quote units

The Binance filter documentation illustrates independent price, lot-size and notional rules. The numbers in our table are invented for arithmetic. Obtain the actual pair’s current requirements rather than copying them into a real request. A form accepting your typed text does not establish that server validation will accept the order.

Example one: sufficient balance, insufficient order value

Assume the unit price is 4 and the required minimum order value is 10 quote units. Buying two units creates a notional value of 8, below the requirement, even if the account holds 1,000. At the same price, reaching a value of 10 mathematically requires 2.5 units. That amount still needs to meet quantity increments, bounds and all other rules.

Understanding this condition does not oblige you to increase the purchase. If the smallest acceptable request exceeds the amount you intended to use, you can decline to submit it. A trading minimum is an acceptance condition rather than a recommendation to spend more or alter an investment decision.

Keep cost and volume minimums separate. The Kraken cost-minimum explanation identifies a quote-currency requirement and distinguishes it from base-asset volume. A minimum stated in the second currency of a pair cannot be compared directly with a quantity stated in the first.

Example two: decimal places do not establish a valid step

Suppose quantities must be multiples of 0.1 within their allowed bounds. A request for 2.05 is off that grid; 2.0 and 2.1 are on it. Displaying more decimal places does not make a quantity acceptable. Numerical detail and the market’s allowed increments are different concepts.

At a price of 4, however, quantities of 2.0 and 2.1 have values of 8 and 8.4. Both remain below the illustrative minimum value of 10. Correcting the step therefore does not fix the notional check. A quantity of 2.5 meets both of those hypothetical requirements, but passing two checks still does not guarantee overall acceptance.

If the allowed step were 0.05 instead, 2.05 could meet that particular condition while 2.03 would not. Both use two decimal places. Validate against the actual increment and its defined origin or formula rather than checking only how many digits appear after the decimal point.

Example three: rounding changes the economic instruction

Assume a price tick of 0.05 and a proposed buy limit of 4.03. Under a multiples-of-0.05 rule, the surrounding allowed prices are 4.00 and 4.05. Rounding upward raises the maximum purchase price you accept. Rounding downward lowers it. The choice affects the intended trading condition, not just the appearance of the number.

With quantity 2.5, those prices produce notionals of 10 and 10.125. With quantity 2.4, they produce 9.6 and 9.72, both below the minimum of 10. Recalculate after every price or quantity adjustment. Resolving the first error shown on screen does not mean that every remaining validation condition has been met.

For a sale, rounding a limit downward can allow a lower selling price than originally intended. If the next permitted increment does not match your decision, do not send the revised request. Passing a filter establishes neither price suitability nor the existence of sufficient matching liquidity.

Check order type, field meaning and available funds

A market order does not provide the same explicit price as a limit order. The service may use a specified reference or separate calculation for its notional check. Do not assume that multiplying by any recent last-trade price recreates the acceptance logic. Review the rules that apply to that order type.

Some interfaces accept base quantity, while others accept quote-currency spending. Entering 100 in a spending field does not request 100 asset units. Read the unit and preview when moving between instant purchase, an order book and an API. The same visible number can represent a substantially different instruction.

Even a correctly formatted request can lack available funds because other orders reserve part of the balance or fees require additional coverage. Inspect fee currency and the actual preview rather than adding an arbitrary reserve. Withdrawal minimums are separate from trading minimums; the transfer fee calculator addresses a different stage.

For API users, verify the transmitted values

Refresh market metadata through the documented mechanism and retain the pair, units and supported options explicitly. Use decimal-safe numerical handling appropriate to the integration. A number displayed as 2.5 can be serialized differently after intermediate floating-point operations or formatting. Inspect the final outgoing numeric text, not only an earlier variable printed during calculation.

Keep secrets out of debugging records. When preparing a reproducible support example, remove API credentials and sensitive account information while preserving the relevant field values and error response. Repeated explicit validation failure calls for a review of the actual submitted request and current rules, not repeated changes to unrelated account settings.

A compact checklist before another attempt

  1. Confirm whether the previous attempt was rejected or remains uncertain.
  2. Identify pair, direction, order type and every field’s unit.
  3. Check quantity bounds and steps, then price bounds and ticks.
  4. Recalculate value after any rounding and apply the correct order-type rules.
  5. Review available balance, reservations and fee treatment.
  6. Submit only if the revised instruction still matches your intended amount and price.

A rejection message alone does not establish lost funds. Reconcile actual orders, fills, fees and balances before drawing that conclusion. For observation without a transaction, use the watchlist. If the issue is instead a transfer already sent between addresses, start with the transfer diagnostic helper, because network and deposit rules answer a different question.
