Why Bitcoin prices differ between exchanges

Bitcoin has no single worldwide order book. Different venues can display different prices because their buyers, sellers, instruments and update times differ. Before interpreting a gap, distinguish a normal market difference from a mismatch in the data you are comparing.

Different venues have different orders

A trading venue matches the orders available within its own market. If buying demand increases there, the best available sell offers can be consumed and the next trades may happen at higher prices. Another venue can have a different set of orders at that moment. A shared asset does not force their most recent trades to occur at exactly the same price.

The Bitcoin FAQ explains the role of supply and demand in price formation. Apply that idea at the venue level without assuming every discrepancy proves manipulation or a special opportunity. First identify the actual product, observation time and price field. Those checks often explain an apparent gap before a more complex theory is needed.

The quote currency may be different

BTC/USD and BTC/USDT are not identical pairs. One is quoted in a fiat currency, the other in a token with its own market and operational characteristics. Comparing them as if the quote units were permanently interchangeable can create a misleading premium. A local-currency display may also include a conversion rate that updates on a different schedule.

If a hypothetical venue quotes Bitcoin at 60,000 units of token X while another quotes 59,900 dollars, you still need the contemporaneous dollar value of token X to compare them. If X is worth 0.995 dollars in your executable conversion, the first quote corresponds to 59,700 dollars before conversion costs. The larger raw number was not the larger dollar value in that example.

Last trade, bid and ask answer different questions

A last trade records an execution that already occurred. A bid is an offer to buy; an ask is an offer to sell. The spread between bid and ask can widen in thin or unsettled conditions. If one screen highlights the last trade and another highlights the ask, a displayed difference may be largely a field mismatch.

Consider a fictional venue with a bid of 59,980, an ask of 60,020 and a previous trade at 60,010. All three figures can be valid at once. A buyer seeking immediate execution would look at available asks, while a seller would look at bids. A chart’s last trade cannot promise either participant the same outcome.

Liquidity determines how much can trade

The best ask is only one price level and has a quantity attached. An order larger than that quantity can consume offers at progressively higher prices. A thin book may show a competitive first offer but become expensive for the full intended purchase. Compare depth for the same quantity rather than ranking venues by their first displayed digit.

Fictional sell offersQuantityCost if fully taken
$60,000 per BTC0.01 BTC$600
$60,100 per BTC0.02 BTC$1,202
Combined execution0.03 BTC$1,802

The combined average in this example is 1,802 divided by 0.03, or approximately 60,066.67 dollars per BTC. That is higher than the first offer of 60,000. Use weighted average fill calculations to analyse actual partial fills, then add any fees charged outside the quoted trade amount.

Update timing can exaggerate a gap

An active stream and a delayed widget can describe different moments. So can two live streams with different event arrival times. During a rapid move, even a short lag can make a stale quote look unusually attractive. Check the event timestamp and connection state, not only the clock shown in the browser.

A screenshot taken now can contain an older price. A historical candle close may also use a different timezone or interval from another chart. Match the source settings and observation window before calculating a premium. If the feed’s freshness is unknown, label it unknown. A price gap based on unverified timing should not be presented as an available trade.

Funding and transfer constraints matter

Moving funds between venues requires the relevant deposit and withdrawal routes to work. Network compatibility, service processing, confirmation policies and account restrictions can all affect timing. A displayed market remains visible even when a particular user cannot deposit the required currency or withdraw the purchased asset.

Treat a withdrawal-disabled market differently from a fully accessible route. An apparent premium can persist because market participants cannot move the necessary funds freely. Do not assume a purchase can be reversed or a transfer accelerated to preserve a price difference. The other venue’s executable price can change while you wait.

Calculate the complete route, including uncertainty

Suppose an invented comparison shows Bitcoin available at 60,000 dollars on venue A and a sell bid of 60,300 on venue B. For 0.01 BTC, the gross difference is 3 dollars. If purchase and sale fees total 2 dollars and the transfer costs 2 dollars, the route loses 1 dollar before any movement in price. The 300-dollar unit difference did not represent 300 dollars of profit on that quantity.

Now consider that both accounts are already funded. That may remove the immediate transfer from one step, but it does not remove inventory management, execution risk, trading costs or later rebalancing. Keep the calculation attached to the actual arrangement. A simplified diagram with simultaneous arrows cannot prove that all legs will execute together at their displayed prices.

Use the exchange fee worksheet and transfer fee calculator to separate costs. Enter the current terms yourself and preserve the original units. Our calculators explain arithmetic; they do not check account eligibility, available liquidity or the legitimacy of a destination.

A practical explanation checklist

Record the two venues, exact pair, instrument type, bid or ask direction, quantity, event timestamps and fee assumptions. Then check whether both relevant routes are available to your account. Only after those fields match should you describe a residual venue premium. Keep the explanation proportional to the evidence.

If a supposed opportunity requires sending funds to an unknown platform, granting remote access or paying an extra amount to unlock earnings, stop and verify the service independently. A large advertised gap can be an inducement rather than a market observation. A useful comparison explains why the numbers differ and what remains uncertain; it does not transform a screenshot into a guaranteed return.
