Compare Bitcoin prices: match the time, pair and source

Two Bitcoin prices are comparable only after you identify the instrument, time and price field behind each number. A useful comparison is a short evidence record, not a pair of screenshots with different settings. This guide provides a worksheet you can repeat without implying a live quote.

Define the question before opening charts

Are you comparing market observations, estimating the cost of buying, or checking a completed sale? Each task needs different evidence. A last trade may be sufficient to describe what occurred on a venue, but an estimated purchase requires offers available for your intended quantity. A completed sale should be assessed using the execution receipt rather than a later chart.

Write the question in one sentence, such as: what would the displayed purchase cost be for 0.01 BTC using this funding method? That sentence fixes the direction, amount and context. Without it, you can accidentally compare a seller’s bid on one screen with a buyer’s ask on another and interpret the spread as an unexplained inconsistency.

Step 1: identify the complete instrument

Copy the full trading pair and venue. BTC/USD, BTC/EUR and BTC/USDT use different quote assets. A dollar-equivalent display is not necessarily a dollar settlement product. If a service converts a price for presentation, note the conversion source and timestamp as a separate step. Do not silently assume a stablecoin is always exactly equal to a fiat unit.

Next identify spot, futures, perpetuals, indexes or other products. Different contract terms create different economic exposures. If one chart represents a derivative and another represents spot, label them separately and explain why you are comparing them. For a simple purchase-cost worksheet, keep the comparison within the same intended spot asset and settlement currency.

Step 2: align the observation period

Use a timestamp that includes the date, seconds when available and timezone. UTC is convenient for a working record because it avoids local clock differences, although any clearly identified zone works. If a provider exposes an event time and an arrival time, preserve both. The time you captured a screenshot is not automatically the time of its underlying trade.

For candle comparisons, match the interval and boundary. A one-hour high cannot be compared meaningfully with a full-day high. Two daily candles can cover different hours when their timezone settings differ. Record whether the last candle is complete. An unfinished candle is an evolving observation rather than a fixed historical close.

Step 3: match the price field

FieldWhat it describesWhat it does not establish
Last tradeAn earlier completed executionThe next executable price
Best askLowest displayed sell offerAvailability for your entire order
Best bidHighest displayed buy offerYour net sale proceeds
IndexA methodology-based referenceA direct order fill

A midpoint is the average of a bid and an ask at a given instant. It is a convenient reference, but neither side may offer execution at the midpoint. If the ask is 60,020 and the bid is 59,980 in a fictional market, the midpoint is 60,000 and the spread is 40. Calling all three the price conceals the distinction that matters to a buyer or seller.

Step 4: compare a stated quantity

A top-of-book quote may cover only a small amount. For a larger purchase, inspect successive sell orders and calculate the weighted execution cost. Ten decimal places on the first offer do not tell you how much liquidity is available. An order preview can also have a validity window, so keep its timestamp and any conditions.

Suppose a fictional purchase fills 0.006 BTC at 60,000 and 0.004 BTC at 60,100. The gross cost is 360 plus 240.40, or 600.40 dollars. Dividing by 0.01 BTC gives an average fill price of 60,040 dollars. Comparing the first displayed offer of 60,000 with another venue’s full-order estimate would mix two different measurements.

Step 5: add the costs relevant to the task

A purchase funded from an existing balance can have different total costs from a card-funded purchase. A withdrawal to an external wallet can add a separate charge. Keep trading, funding, conversion and withdrawal lines separate until you know which ones apply. Use the exchange fee guide to identify where a headline rate omits another part of the route.

Fictional optionGross 0.01 BTC costTrading feeOther included costsTotal
Venue A$600.40$3.00$0.00$603.40
Venue B$600.00$6.00$0.00$606.00

Venue B has the lower gross purchase price in this invented example, but the higher total under the stated fees. The table is not a platform recommendation. If funding or withdrawal terms differ, add those costs before using it for a complete route comparison. Keep any fee denominated in BTC in its original unit as well as its clearly dated conversion.

Step 6: calculate and label the difference

State the denominator. If reference A is 60,000 and observation B is 60,120, the difference relative to A is (60,120 − 60,000) ÷ 60,000 × 100, or 0.20%. Reversing the reference changes the percentage slightly. A sentence saying prices differ by 0.20% should identify the reference, pair, field and observation time.

A percentage alone does not tell you whether the difference is actionable. In the fictional 0.01 BTC purchase, a 120-dollar difference per BTC is only 1.20 dollars before fees. If the extra route costs 3 dollars, the lower quoted unit price does not compensate for that expense. Calculate using the actual intended quantity.

Save a record another person can inspect

Keep source URLs, the instrument identifiers, timestamps, quoted quantities, field names, fee assumptions and rounding method. Do not store credentials, private keys or recovery phrases with a comparison. A worksheet should support a reproducible calculation using public market observations and your own non-secret receipts.

Use the Bitcoin market page as a starting point for reading a third-party chart, then inspect the relevant service’s actual order information. The Bitcoin FAQ explains why supply and demand affect market prices; it does not imply that separate venues must show identical numbers. When a required field is unknown, mark the comparison incomplete instead of compensating with a stronger conclusion.
