A small balance after a sale can reflect quantity increments, minimum order values, commissions or incomplete execution. Reconcile it before buying more merely to remove the remainder. The useful outcome is knowing what you own, why it remains and what any further action would cost.
At an assumed price of 20, the remainder has a reference value of 0.14 before any conversion or transfer cost.

Dust commonly describes a balance too small for a product’s normal trading minimum or uneconomic to move after fees. There is no universal unit quantity defining it across all assets. A small fraction of one token can be worth more than thousands of another. Read the amount, its valuation and the applicable rules together.
The Kraken small-balance conversion guide describes a specific feature with eligibility conditions. Its existence does not establish equivalent support at every venue or for every asset. Exchange-account remnants also differ from small on-chain outputs and unsolicited tokens arriving in a personal wallet.
Example one: a quantity step leaves 0.007
Assume a hypothetical free balance of 2.057 units and a trading step of 0.01. Under a rule accepting multiples of that step, 2.05 is valid but 2.057 is not. Selling all 2.05 leaves 0.007 units before considering any other fee or movement. The remainder follows directly from the quantity grid.
At an assumed price of 20, the remainder’s reference value is 0.14. That does not establish that a separate sale is accepted. The quantity may still be off the permitted grid, and its value may also be below a minimum. Those are independent conditions, so knowing the valuation alone does not resolve both.
| Hypothetical item | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Initial free quantity | 2.057 | Available before the sale |
| Quantity step | 0.01 | Permitted increment |
| Completed sale quantity | 2.05 | Valid multiple in this example |
| Remainder | 0.007 | Initial minus sold |
| Reference valuation at 20 | 0.14 | Before cleanup costs |
Use the actual pair’s current rules. A wallet can display more decimal places than a trading form accepts, and order types or markets can have different requirements. The order-rejection guide separates quantity steps from minimum values so you can identify the specific obstacle rather than changing several numbers blindly.
Example two: the order simply did not finish
Suppose a ten-unit sell request has executed 9.4, leaving 0.6. This is not automatically a precision remnant. Depending on the order’s lifetime and status, the remainder may still be an active instruction or may have ended without further execution. The value of 0.6 can also be significant for some assets.
Check cumulative execution, active remaining quantity and last update time. An open remainder may reserve units, making them unavailable to a new order. Sending another instruction without reconciling the first can fail or duplicate the intended sale. If you cancel, inspect final fills because execution can occur before the cancellation is processed.
A shortened 100% label can also conceal product-specific completion or display rounding. Reconcile actual fill quantities with balances and the documented semantics. If records disagree, preserve the order identifier and times and ask official support for the explanation rather than inventing an unrecorded commission.
Keep fee assets and leftover assets separate
A small balance might belong to a fee token previously held, not the asset just sold. Confirm the full token identity, pair and actual deduction currency. A displayed 0.007 in another asset cannot be treated as 0.007 of the asset under review, even if abbreviated names look similar.
For one asset, begin with the opening quantity, add incoming movements and subtract confirmed sales, sends and fees actually charged in that same asset. Do not subtract a cash commission from token units. If the display shows only a small converted valuation, open the asset details to find the underlying quantity.
Read the preview of any small-balance feature
When an official conversion option exists, inspect the assets selected, destination asset, costs and net result. A multi-asset operation can include balances beyond the one you intended to clear. Check the complete selection rather than approving a group solely because its combined value appears small.
The Bitvavo small-balance guide illustrates service-specific handling. A max button is not a universal promise to bypass all minimums. Read whether the action sells, converts, hides or removes a balance, because those outcomes can differ.
Hiding an asset can change only its visibility. Removal under a product’s terms may have an effect different from a sale for proceeds. Disappearance from the portfolio list does not prove that cash arrived. Review the resulting ledger movement and what, if anything, was credited in return.
Compare the cost with the value being recovered
Assume the remainder is valued at 0.14 reference-currency units. A hypothetical conversion costing 0.02 leaves equivalent net value of 0.12. A transfer requiring a cost equivalent to 0.30 costs more than the balance’s estimated value. Technical transferability does not establish that the route serves the goal economically.
Save valuation time and conversion assumptions, and distinguish fees deducted from the amount from additional spending. The transfer fee calculator helps compare the transport component. Also check the recipient’s deposit minimum: one venue accepting a withdrawal does not establish that another will credit the amount.
Moving several remnants elsewhere can introduce new transfer costs or minimums rather than solve the original issue. If a separately planned transaction already exists, you can examine whether the remainder fits that route under its rules. Keep that analysis distinct from creating a new funding or trading decision merely to tidy a screen.
Adding funds is not an automatic repair
Buying or depositing enough to exceed a trading minimum can create fees, new exposure and another precision remainder after the eventual sale. It is not necessarily a free or final cleanup step. Review eligible official conversion support and whether leaving or visually hiding the balance meets the actual purpose.
If you independently choose to add funds, calculate the whole sequence first. Do not raise a budget solely because an inconvenient decimal balance makes the account look unfinished. A zero displayed balance is not inherently worth any amount of extra spending or additional financial commitments.
Unsolicited wallet dust needs a different investigation
A token or small transfer you did not acquire may be unrelated to the sale. Avoid following a promotional link embedded in its name or granting contract access merely to clear it. The Exodus dust explanation discusses unsolicited transfers and their potential use in attacks.
Use trusted records to identify the movement when necessary. Do not import private keys into a cleanup website or disclose recovery words to investigate a tiny amount. For an external transfer that appears missing, use the transfer helper instead. For an exchange remainder, the final reconciliation should identify ownership, availability, applicable limits and the net effect of any proposed action.
