Clipboard address replacement: Four checks before confirming a transfer

You may copy a correct receiving address and find another value in the destination field. Verification therefore continues after selecting the source: inspect the pasted value and the final signing request. An unexplained change is a reason to stop and investigate before sending money.

Where replacement can occur

Malicious software can monitor a clipboard and replace a copied cryptocurrency address with one selected by an attacker. In that scenario the receiving source may be genuine while the value changes during transfer into the sending interface. MetaMask describes the pattern in its clipboard hacking guidance.

This differs from address poisoning, where the user selects a misleading address in the first place. Other possibilities include selecting another account, using a different network or opening a false receiving page. Identify the first point of mismatch before assigning every symptom the same diagnosis.

You do not need to execute a transfer to establish that the destination differs from your reference. A mismatch is sufficient reason to stop. Confirmation cannot repair an unexplained discrepancy; it may turn it into a financial result that is difficult to change.

1. Establish the reference you are comparing against

Return to verified receiving details for the intended recipient, asset and network. Comparing against an unfamiliar page or old unverified image can produce a perfect match with the wrong destination. Source authenticity and copying integrity are separate questions.

Check whether the recipient legitimately changed addresses or uses several receiving accounts. Do not infer malware merely because you compared instructions for two different purposes. Describe what you copied, where you copied it from and which field received it.

For a platform deposit, review its current account-specific instructions. For a known person, verify changed payment information through an established channel. A name or logo by itself is not enough to anchor the comparison.

2. Inspect the full value after pasting

Open the application’s complete address display rather than relying on a shortened preview. Compare the middle as well as the beginning and end. A familiar outline can conceal the difference the review is meant to find.

If the value differs, stop preparing the transfer. Repeated rapid copying is not a reliable resolution because substitution could be persistent or depend on particular conditions. Keep non-secret observations describing where the change appeared.

Do not publish unnecessary identity links or service credentials when asking for help. A public address is not a private key, but associating it with a person can still expose financial information. Share only the facts needed to investigate the copying issue.

3. Review what will actually be signed

Check destination, amount, asset, network, fee and any required additional data. Where a signing device independently displays supported details, follow its official method and compare those details with your trusted reference.

An independent screen is useful only if read. It cannot determine your intended recipient from a friendly label alone. If a request type does not expose enough meaningful detail, understand that limitation instead of assuming the device has authenticated your intention automatically.

Treat any disagreement between host and signing display as unresolved until explained. Do not approve because one screen looks more convenient or because a previous operation succeeded. The final request is the one that determines the operation being authorized.

4. Diagnose the environment before continuing

Stop using the suspected environment for sensitive transfers and review applications, extensions and wallet installation sources through reliable guidance. Avoid installing a cleaning utility from an advertisement or unsolicited message. Recovery words are not needed to test whether copied public text matches.

If another environment is needed, use an official process appropriate to the wallet without assuming that moving devices eliminates all earlier exposure. Clipboard suspicion alone does not establish private-key theft, but additional evidence may indicate a broader problem.

A targeted response distinguishes an input-integrity failure, a misleading source and exposure of signing secrets. Those involve different authority and different consequences. Preserve the observations needed to make that distinction rather than immediately resetting everything.

Each verification point answers a different question

PointQuestionIf it differs
Receiving sourceApproved recipient and route?Confirm source independently
Destination fieldFull value preserved after paste?Stop and diagnose the change
ConfirmationIntended destination and amounts?Reject the mismatched request
Signing deviceSupported details match the reference?Do not approve an unexplained conflict
Executed historyActual destination and status?Document and choose state-specific response

Example: right source, changed destination field

Huda prepares a hypothetical 75-unit transfer using independently confirmed receiving details. After pasting, she compares the complete address and sees a difference in the middle. No test payment is needed to establish that the draft no longer matches her instruction.

She cancels, records a non-secret description and checks that both references concern the same account and network. She does not manually repair a few characters and continue on the same unexplained basis. The next task is diagnosis of the environment and transfer path.

The example is not a forensic finding about a particular malicious program. It illustrates an operational stopping point. Determining the root cause may need specialist tools, but declining a visibly mismatched request need not wait for that report.

Do QR codes or manual typing solve it?

A QR code changes the input method but does not authenticate its source or eliminate every interface manipulation. Inspect the fields populated by the scan and compare them with the intended recipient and route. An unknown sender’s image is not trustworthy merely because it can be scanned.

Manual typing can introduce transcription errors, especially for long addresses. The goal is a genuine reference and a verifiable final request, not replacing one habit with a different ritual. Choose a supported method whose result you can check.

A successful previous test describes that operation. Copying again, using another program or changing the network creates new facts to review. A payment reaching an address also does not identify the recipient without independent confirmation.

If you notice the issue after sending

Read the transaction identifier, network, actual destination and status through an appropriate source. For a pending request, review the product’s official options without assuming cancellation will work. Removing software does not reverse a confirmed transfer.

Record the program used and where the first discrepancy was observed, with private service details removed from images. Keep incident evidence separate from steps to prevent repetition. Our address poisoning guide helps distinguish an initially wrong selection from a change during copying.
