Wallet support asks for your recovery words? Four checks before sharing data

Technical support needs to understand the fault; it does not normally need your wallet's spending authority. If someone requests recovery words in a chat or external form, stop sharing and verify the channel and purpose. A logo, staff photo or accurate error description does not authenticate the sender.

How support impersonation begins

You may post a question publicly and receive a fast reply moving the conversation into private messages. An advertisement may lead to a page resembling a help center. The confusion starts when response speed or knowledge of the product is treated as proof of affiliation.

An impersonator can exploit a real outage or read your public transaction identifier. Accurate public facts do not establish an official role or justify receiving additional secrets. Verify authority through the product’s independently reached support route.

Different products use different channels, so do not assume every company provides the same phone, email or chat workflow. The practical rule is to begin from a verified source and understand what the particular process requests.

1. Verify the channel independently

Open the product site you recognize and use the support path it publishes. Do not rely on the suspicious message’s own link or contact number to authenticate that message. If a ticket already exists, review it through the original channel.

A social verification symbol does not by itself establish authority to handle your wallet. Match the contact to the product, ticket and published communication method. A similar staff name or copied image can conceal a different account.

MetaMask’s official FAQ explains the limits of its ability to recover a lost recovery phrase. Claims of special support powers should be checked against the relevant product’s documented capabilities, not accepted because a private account promises a convenient result.

2. Link each requested fact to a diagnostic question

Application version, device type, network and an error message can help locate a fault. A transaction identifier can support a status investigation. Ask which question each item answers and what minimum disclosure is enough, especially in a public forum.

Recovery words, private keys, passwords and authentication codes are not substitutes for an error message. They can grant authority far beyond reading network data. Describing a request as automated checking or synchronization does not change the nature of what would be disclosed.

Public identifiers still carry privacy implications when linked to your identity. Do not publish a complete financial history if one relevant operation will do. An appropriate diagnostic record is useful because it is precise, not because it contains everything you can export.

3. Review screenshots and logs before sending

Inspect the whole attachment, not only the error you want to highlight. It may show another account, a secret in the background, a private provider URL or personal data unrelated to the fault. Crop or redact unnecessary content before sharing.

For diagnostic logs, read the product’s explanation of their contents and supported export method. A filename containing log is not proof that the file contains no sensitive information. Do not attach the wallet backup merely because the form allows uploads.

If a URL includes a service identifier or credential, distinguish that from a wallet key while still protecting it appropriately. Explain the provider and error without automatically publishing every access parameter embedded in the link.

4. Treat new access as a new decision

A conversation may move from reading a fault to signing a message, installing an extension or allowing remote control. Each transition needs its own explanation: what changes, who obtains access and why a lower-access diagnostic step is insufficient.

Do not sign spending authority simply because the sender calls it proof of ownership. Read request type, recipient of authority, value and network. If you cannot explain the request, return to the original verified channel without testing it on real holdings.

A genuine support workflow may offer an optional connection for context. Connection does not make every later request acceptable, nor does it justify sending a recovery phrase. Understand what data is shared and what separate action is being authorized.

Example: a balance synchronization page

Lina cannot see a token in the asset list. Someone sends a branded form asking for recovery words to synchronize the balance. The word synchronization does not explain why a display issue requires the authority to recreate spending keys.

Lina closes that sharing route and opens genuine product guidance independently. Relevant facts may include network, token contract and public account, depending on the question. The missing token could concern visibility, account identity or a different network; handing over secrets does not establish which one applies.

Our empty balance guide organizes those diagnostic questions. Use it to narrow the observation before granting a repair service broader access.

Write a clear, limited technical report

State the product version and device, the intended network, the step immediately before the fault, expected result and actual result. Include sanitized error text and a public transaction identifier only when relevant. Explain material changes made before the problem appeared.

Keep the ticket reference within the official channel. If a new party claims to be following up, confirm there rather than forwarding attachments automatically because they know the issue’s title. Do not generate new unexplained signatures merely to provide another identifier.

If information has already been shared

Identify exactly what left: public address, screenshot, login code, file or recovery material. Their risks differ. Deleting a chat or changing a display name does not retract a copied secret. Stop further disclosure and follow official response guidance appropriate to the actual exposure.

Keep non-secret evidence for reporting, and be wary of a second paid promise guaranteeing complete recovery. A useful support response explains limits as well as possible steps. A persuasive promise does not make transferring spending authority an ordinary diagnostic requirement.
