Unknown tokens in your wallet? Four checks before opening their links

An unfamiliar token appearing at your address does not prove you received a saleable reward, and its arrival alone does not prove someone obtained your keys. Investigate through public data without turning curiosity into an unexplained signature, payment or disclosure of recovery secrets.

Why assets you did not request can appear

Depending on the network and token mechanism, another party may send tokens to a public address without the owner’s prior approval. Some distributions are promotional; others are designed to mislead. The presence of a quantity in the asset list does not identify the purpose.

A wallet displays information rather than certifying every issuer. The name, image, quantity and estimated value can originate from different data sources. Ask what each observation actually establishes instead of combining them into a conclusion that cash is ready to withdraw.

This guide concerns unsolicited tokens that already appeared. Evaluating participation in an announced distribution involves further questions about terms, privacy and costs. The existence of legitimate distributions elsewhere does not validate the specific token you encountered.

1. Identify the token by network and contract

Record the network, complete contract address and transaction identifier where relevant. Names and logos can be imitated. Use an appropriate trusted public data source, distinguishing transaction evidence from advertisements and external links placed around it.

Reading public contract information should not require private keys. If an investigation leads to a page asking you to restore or synchronize the wallet with its words, you are no longer merely reading public data. Stop and examine why the page is requesting spending secrets.

A source may identify that a transaction or contract exists without proving the issuer’s claimed affiliation. Keep that narrower finding separate from project authentication. The token’s own website link cannot serve as independent evidence for itself.

2. Separate quantity from realizable value

A large quantity or impressive displayed dollar figure does not establish liquidity, redemption rights or the ability to sell. An interface estimate is not a binding offer from a buyer. Do not plan spending around a number before understanding its source and meaning.

Repeated random sell attempts are not a necessary way to disprove a valuation. Failure may lead to more fees or a page claiming you must activate the asset first. Start with identity and purpose, then decide whether there is any reliable reason to interact.

MetaMask describes failed transaction scams in which apparent token value and failure messages funnel users toward misleading instructions. Treat a link embedded in an error as unverified content rather than official support.

3. Find any claimed announcement independently

If the token claims association with a known project, open that project’s established channels independently. Do not use the link embedded in the token name or transaction message as the proof of association. A fast reply in a public group is not automatically verified support.

Compare the announced network, contract and distribution conditions, rather than only the visual branding. You may be unable to prove every detail of a scam; uncertainty does not oblige you to connect a wallet or spend funds to resolve it.

A public explorer can help read activity, but a link shown on a token page is not necessarily endorsed by the explorer operator. Maintain the distinction between user-controlled metadata, interface presentation and independently verified project information.

4. Assess each signature or payment as a new operation

Receiving a token does not authorize a website to request access to another asset. Read the request type, spender, value and network. If the stated task is selling an unknown token while the request grants authority over a different holding, resolve that mismatch before approving.

A page may request an activation payment, personal information or recovery words. The earlier on-chain receipt does not make these necessary steps. A missing immediate gas fee also does not prove that an off-chain signature has no later effect.

Our signature review guide explains the distinction between creating a signature and its later use. Never approve merely to find out what the request will do.

Example: a gift asking to spend another token

Yaser sees a hypothetical 5,000 unfamiliar units valued by an interface at $800. The name leads him to a page claiming he can collect the value. The request it prepares concerns spending a different token he already holds. The numbers are illustrative, not a current quote.

Yaser identifies the mismatch without signing to test the outcome. He does not send a fee merely because it is smaller than the displayed reward. If reporting the page, he retains the contract address, URL and a non-secret description of the request.

He then distinguishes what he actually did: viewing the asset list, opening a page, connecting, signing and disclosing secrets are different events. This determines what needs investigation. An unexplained permission and an exposed recovery phrase cannot be addressed by the same narrow display action.

Do you need to send the token away?

A transfer is not necessary merely to tidy the asset list. Review the wallet’s supported hide or ignore feature, selecting the appropriate account. Hiding ordinarily changes presentation rather than removing the token’s history from the network.

Sending an unfamiliar token is itself an interaction that can cost fees or fail. Do not assume it eliminates every risk. Separate the display goal from investigating any authorization or transaction you previously approved. Our custom token guide explains those presentation limits.

Use warnings without treating them as guarantees

Wallet warnings can help identify known patterns, but their absence does not prove a request is appropriate. A missing verification badge likewise does not by itself establish fraud. Understand what a classification means and retain the independent source checks.

Do not disable protections simply because the token’s page says they prevent claiming. If you already interacted, record the exact steps and use official response guidance for that exposure. Keep recovery secrets out of reports and avoid paid promises that guarantee every asset can be recovered.
