An order setting controls a defined part of an instruction, not the final investment outcome. Read the quantity, price condition, duration and trigger rules together. Then inspect what actually filled, because submission, activation and execution are different stages.
Not every order has a trigger. The provider defines supported types and their behaviour.

Identify the asset, pair, product, direction and amount. Confirm whether the amount field uses base units or quote currency. A spot purchase and a derivative position require different assumptions even if the interface displays similar order controls.
Record the purpose of each setting in ordinary language. A buy limit caps the acceptable unit price; it does not require the full quantity to fill. A stop condition can activate an order; it does not guarantee the resulting execution price. Clear language makes a preview easier to check.
The market and limit guide provides a worked order-book example. Apply its concepts using the actual service’s documentation, not as a universal specification for every platform.
Market orders use available execution
A market instruction generally interacts with available opposing orders under the venue’s rules. A buy uses sell offers and a sale uses buy bids. The last-traded price is an earlier observation, not a guaranteed reference for the full amount.
Different levels can fill parts of one order. If a hypothetical purchase fills 2 units at 100 and 3 at 102, gross cost is 506 for 5 units, giving an average of 101.20. The first price of 100 did not describe the full execution.
Some providers apply protections, minimums or rejection rules. Market does not mean every instruction will always complete in any conditions. Read the final status and receipt, especially after an outage or an unusually fast move.
Limit orders constrain price but can remain open
A buy limit sets a maximum acceptable price and a sell limit a minimum. If no suitable counterparties are available, the instruction can remain unfilled according to its time-in-force and service rules. A better-looking limit price can therefore correspond to no completed transaction.
An aggressive limit can execute immediately against existing orders, so limit does not automatically mean maker fee treatment. Read how the service classifies liquidity provision and taking. A post-only setting, where supported, adds its own documented behaviour.
For a hypothetical 5-unit buy limit at 101, the 2 units available at 100 could execute while 3 offered at 102 do not. The account would then hold 2 purchased units and an unresolved remainder, not the full intended 5.
Triggers and order prices are different fields
A stop or other conditional instruction uses a defined event to activate an action. The provider specifies the reference price and condition. A chart’s last value may not be the same reference used by the contract or service.
After activation, execution follows the resulting order’s rules. A stop-market can fill away from its trigger, while a stop-limit can remain unfilled beyond its price boundary. The stop comparison guide explains that tradeoff.
Do not describe a trigger as a guaranteed maximum loss. Gaps, liquidity, costs and service conditions can change the realised result. A planned risk amount is a scenario based on assumptions, not an obligation for the market to execute at the chosen level.
Time-in-force affects the remaining instruction
Read whether the order can rest, expires at a stated time or requires immediate execution conditions. Names and support vary across services. Use the actual definitions, especially when partial completion matters to your plan.
A resting order can execute after you have stopped watching the screen. Keep open instructions in a separate record from completed trades. If the purpose changes, review the remaining instruction rather than assuming it disappeared when the browser tab closed.
Cancellation also needs confirmation. A fill can occur while a cancellation request is being processed. Inspect the final status and balances before entering a replacement that could duplicate exposure. A button click is evidence of your request, not necessarily of its completed outcome.
Costs belong beside the fill record
| Field | What to preserve |
|---|---|
| Order ID and type | The original instruction |
| Submitted quantity | The intended amount and unit |
| Filled quantity | What actually executed |
| Fill prices | Each execution or weighted average |
| Fees | Amount, currency and inclusion |
| Final status | Filled, partial, cancelled or still open |
A fee added in quote currency changes total cash cost. A fee deducted from the acquired asset changes net units. Keep the convention explicit. The average-fill guide separates weighted execution price from effective cost including fees.
For the hypothetical 506-dollar gross purchase, an added 1% fee is 5.06, making total cost 511.06. If all 5 units are received, effective cost is 102.212 per unit. That differs from the 101.20 execution average because the calculation includes another expense.
Read linked or automated instructions carefully
Some services offer combined orders or automated conditions. Check when each component becomes active, how quantities are linked and what happens after a partial fill or cancellation. Do not infer universal behaviour from a familiar abbreviation.
Automation repeats documented logic; it does not make the underlying decision profitable. A connection failure or restart can create uncertainty about which instruction was accepted. Use the provider’s order records rather than blindly resubmitting because a local screen timed out.
Keep permissions limited to the intended task and understand revocation. A trading integration does not necessarily need withdrawal authority. Protect account credentials and API secrets as access material, not as ordinary troubleshooting notes.
Reconcile the request with the outcome
Compare the original preview, submitted instruction, fills, fees and final status. Separate an input error from an adverse market movement after a correctly entered order. Preserve the original reason before the outcome so the review does not become a story rewritten afterward.
The Investor.gov order overview provides basic concepts in its securities context. Actual crypto rules remain product-specific. Understanding an instruction helps assess what happened, while the future price and suitability of the exposure remain separate questions.
Keep open exposure visible
A partially filled order and its remaining instruction should appear separately in the review. The filled portion affects holdings now, while the remainder may execute later. Updating a journal only after everything fills can hide that interim exposure. Record changes when they occur, using the service’s actual status.
