Types of crypto platforms: compare custody and trading models

Crypto platforms can differ in how prices are quoted, orders execute and assets are controlled. A category name is only a starting point. Inspect the actual route and permissions before assuming that centralised, decentralised or peer-to-peer describes every part of the service.

One interface can combine several models. Each asset and route still needs its own review.

An order-book service matches instructions

An order book contains buying and selling instructions at different prices and quantities. A market order can interact with available opposite-side liquidity, while a limit order constrains its acceptable price. The venue defines supported instructions, fees, minimums and final status.

A service can provide an order book and also custody customer assets. Those are separate roles. A trading balance may be an internal account entry until a withdrawal occurs. Read the terms for control, asset treatment and supported withdrawal routes instead of assuming that a completed trade means self-custody.

The market and limit order guide explains partial fills and average execution. A familiar chart does not establish the quantity available at the headline price or the total cost after fees.

A broker or quotation service can package the route

Some services quote an inclusive purchase or sale rather than exposing a full order book. The interface can simplify the process, but inspect what the quote includes: execution, spread, service charge, conversion and any later withdrawal. A single price can conceal several cost layers without necessarily being incorrectly calculated.

Read the quote’s validity window and conditions. An estimated preview and a confirmed all-in quote are different commitments. If the quantity or funding method changes, the quote may no longer apply. Preserve the actual preview and later receipt.

Compare the same endpoint. A quote for assets remaining inside a service differs from a quote including delivery to an external wallet. The fee worksheet helps separate those stages without counting an inclusive charge twice.

An on-chain swap uses a different execution path

An on-chain exchange can use contracts and liquidity pools rather than a conventional central order book. Uniswap’s documentation describes its automated market-making model. That is one implementation example, not a specification for every decentralised service.

Inspect the exact network, contracts, token identities and permissions. A wallet connection is different from authorising a spend, and a transaction can have network costs beyond the quoted exchange rate. Slippage settings and execution conditions need the application’s actual definitions.

Self-custody of a wallet does not remove contract, frontend or token risks. A malicious approval or mistaken transaction can still move assets when signed. Read the requested action and verify the official interface rather than treating the word decentralised as a universal assurance.

Peer-to-peer describes counterparties, not a guarantee

A peer-to-peer arrangement connects participants under a specified exchange process. It can involve an operator, escrow, arbitration, deposits or external payment methods. Read who holds assets during each stage and what evidence resolves a disagreement.

A bank payment and a crypto transfer can have different reversal and finality characteristics. Do not release assets merely because a screenshot claims the other payment completed. Follow the documented process and verify the actual status through the appropriate service.

A counterparty’s rating can inform questions but cannot guarantee the next transaction. Inspect dispute rules, identity assumptions and the consequences of moving communication or payment outside the official process. A category label does not establish that every participant is trustworthy.

Compare key control at each stage

StageQuestion
Before tradeWhere are the funds and who controls them?
During tradeWhat authority or escrow is used?
After executionWhat balance or asset do you hold?
WithdrawalWho approves or signs movement?
FailureWhat supported recovery or dispute path exists?

An interface can begin with a self-custody wallet but involve a contract holding funds during the operation. Another can display assets inside a custodial account after a trade. Trace the stages rather than assigning one custody label to every moment.

The Investor.gov custody bulletin provides questions for reviewing control and storage arrangements. Apply those questions to the actual implementation and its documents.

Calculate total cost for the intended quantity

Include funding, trading, conversion, network and withdrawal costs that actually apply. A fixed fee can matter more for a small amount, while market depth or pool conditions can matter for a larger one. Compare using the same quantity and destination.

A hypothetical route costing 2 dollars in trading charges and 5 dollars to withdraw totals 7 dollars before other expenses. Another route charging 4 dollars for an inclusive delivery is cheaper under those particular assumptions, despite its higher-looking trade charge. Neither example establishes a provider recommendation.

Keep costs in their original units and label conversion rates. If a transaction requires a separately paid native network asset, preserve that line rather than pretending it is deducted from the transferred token automatically.

Check availability, identity and support

Read the operator or protocol documentation, local eligibility and product-specific terms. A public interface being reachable does not establish that every activity is offered or permitted for your account. Verify claims through the relevant official records where applicable.

Use established domains and support routes. Avoid downloading tools or granting remote control because an unsolicited person promises to fix a failed swap or withdrawal. The support review guide explains a useful non-secret case record.

Finish the comparison with the execution model, control chain, settlement steps, total example cost and unresolved questions. The objective is to understand the actual arrangement. No platform type automatically guarantees good execution, reliable recovery, profit or suitability for every user.

Compare a failed transaction path

For each model, write what happens if the operation does not complete. An order can be cancelled without a full fill, a contract transaction can fail under network rules, and an external payment can enter a dispute process. These outcomes do not have identical costs or remedies. Read the relevant documentation rather than assuming an ordinary refund mechanism exists.

Also identify what evidence you retain: order fills, a quotation receipt, an on-chain transaction or an escrow case. A useful platform comparison includes the failure path alongside the normal one. If the route cannot be explained clearly from start to finish, the missing stage remains a material limitation even when the interface looks easy to use.
