A token migration changes how an asset is represented or exchanged between versions. Some holders need an action while others do not because their chain or custodian handles the change differently. Before opening a migration link, locate the balance, identify the relevant deployment, conversion rules and permissions. The project name alone cannot determine the correct procedure.
A display-name update, token migration and bridge transfer are distinct operations.
BTKWIN.COM · EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLEDistinguish migration, renaming and bridging
A wallet can update a symbol or logo without moving units to another contract. A project can instead deploy a replacement token or upgrade a native asset through network rules. Although all may be marketed as upgrades, they do not imply identical user actions.
Bridging to another chain also differs from exchanging an old token for a new version. A project can support multiple paths, but a changed name does not establish a need to bridge. Begin with asset name, present chain, native or contract status and custody location before selecting an interface.
1. Verify the official notice, date and scope
Reach documentation from an independently checked project address and identify the announcement covering the actual balance. A private message, advertisement or search result alone is not the procedure. An authentic older notice can remain historically correct while no longer describing today’s interface, deadline or support.
Read whether instructions concern mainnet, testing, all holders or a defined category. Check for later updates. A short deadline in a message is not established as official simply because its logo resembles an announcement. Preserve the documentation reference and review date so the decision remains explainable.
2. Match old and new asset identities
On token-contract networks, names and logos can match while addresses differ. Compare the entire identifier and chain with official documentation rather than only familiar beginning and ending characters. A search by name can lead to another asset or imitation.
Explorer source verification establishes a limited fact about code identity; it does not prove an unrelated link is the authorized migration route. Match the notice, deployment, network and proposed action. Native assets may require different treatment from contract tokens, so do not fill missing information with an address copied from a comment.
3. Separate self-custody from platform handling
A platform balance follows that provider’s current policy. It may suspend deposits temporarily, rename an asset or replace internal balances. Instructions for a personal wallet do not automatically apply to a custodial account. Never assume an obsolete deposit route will infer and process the intended migration.
For self-custody, review the actual chain, address, permission and fee requirements. The same economic asset held in two locations can require different handling. List each platform or wallet, chain, quantity and documented status separately rather than searching for one action covering a combined total.
The Polygon MATIC-to-POL documentation illustrates chain-dependent treatment, including automatic handling on Polygon Chain and a different path for relevant Ethereum holdings. It also explains that a remaining old display symbol need not mean another manual migration is required.
That example does not make all migrations automatic or all holdings eligible for the same manual step. Determine the category that actually applies before following its current instructions. A technical display update and a transfer of ownership through a contract are different events.
4. Check the ratio, eligibility and costs
Do not assume every exchange ratio is one to one. A migration can define a snapshot, deadline, custody category or other eligibility conditions. Separate entitlement to new units from their tradability or support at a later destination.
In a hypothetical ratio of two new units for one old unit, one hundred eligible old units correspond to two hundred new units. That doubles the count, not automatically the economic value. Network charges in another asset remain separate quantities rather than deductions from unrelated token units.
| Record item | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Eligible quantity | Which old units qualify? |
| Conversion ratio | New units per old unit |
| Network charges | Fee asset and amount |
| Restrictions | Dates, custody and other conditions |
The fee calculator can organize manually entered costs but cannot authenticate a migration or establish eligibility. Verify the source and rules before using an arithmetic result to compare expected and received quantities.
5. Read permissions and transactions before signing
A token route may need a spending approval followed by a separate migration transaction. Connecting a wallet, authorizing spending and completing receipt are different stages. Review the token, amount, spender and chain in the wallet request rather than relying on an external button label.
The MetaMask permissions guide distinguishes application connection from token approvals. Closing a page or disconnecting does not automatically revoke an existing on-chain allowance. The appropriate review depends on the actual permission granted.
A migration service does not need a recovery phrase or private key. Authorized signing through a wallet differs from supplying complete control of the wallet to a form. A request to upload secret wallet data or pay a support person for activation needs independent examination before any action.
6. Verify the result before retrying
After submission, retain the transaction identifier and inspect its chain, status, contract and quantities. A new token appearing in a list is insufficient without matching its identity and balance. A stale display is also different from failed execution.
The old token can remain visible for display or mechanism-specific reasons. Do not repeat the procedure merely because its name still appears. Check the first transaction, old and new quantities and the documentation’s stated treatment. Unexplained retries can create extra fees or permissions.
Before forwarding the new asset elsewhere, read that destination’s current support for the chain and deployment. Successful receipt into a personal wallet does not establish exchange deposit compatibility. Do not test an unsupported route by sending funds without a documented crediting policy.
7. Keep the record and review remaining permissions
Record old and new quantities, ratio, charges, date and transaction references. A name change alone does not establish a specific accounting or tax consequence; any such treatment needs the applicable case and rules. Preserve facts that allow later reconciliation.
Review relevant old and new permissions through verified wallet documentation and trusted tools. Successful migration is not permanent endorsement of every later link with the same branding. The contract-verification guide helps separate deployment evidence from security conclusions.
A useful final record states where the balance was held, which official category applied, what action completed and what remains unresolved. More units do not alone establish profit, and not every holding requires manual movement. Matching the actual balance and instructions prevents a generic upgrade message from becoming an unnecessary transaction.
