RSI at 70 and 30: Calculation and the Limits of Trading Signals

RSI summarizes directional price changes using a defined length, source and smoothing method on a zero-to-one-hundred scale. A reading of 70 or 30 does not establish fair value, a reversal date or a probability of profit. Understand the calculation before evaluating any separate rule that uses it.

Identify what the oscillator measures

A common RSI calculation divides smoothed average upward changes by smoothed average downward magnitudes, then transforms that ratio. The TradingView RSI reference gives the expression RSI = 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + RS), with RS based on its gain and loss averages.

The input is not a count of buyers versus sellers. Nor does the indicator measure revenue, contract quality, custody or the ability of a platform to return funds. A reading of seventy is not a 70% price gain or a 70% probability of a decline.

Relative strength in this indicator’s ordinary use also does not automatically mean comparison against bitcoin or another benchmark. It is calculated from the selected series. A comparison of one asset’s return with another requires a separately defined ratio or benchmark calculation.

Work through hypothetical ready-smoothed values

Assume average upward change is 1.4 price units and average downward magnitude is 0.6. Their ratio is approximately 2.3333. Substitution gives 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + 2.3333), or seventy. These are constructed inputs, not current observations or a forecast.

Double both averages to 2.8 and 1.2. The ratio and RSI remain the same even though the absolute input changes are larger. A similar oscillator reading can therefore occur across paths with different monetary scale and volatility.

Equal averages giving fifty do not establish that the asset is unchanged since an arbitrarily chosen historical start. Smoothing describes its defined sequence, whereas a period return compares selected endpoints. Calculate day or month changes directly from their relevant prices rather than deriving them from RSI level.

Seventy and thirty do not compel a reversal

Upper and lower regions are often described as overbought and oversold, but those labels do not bind the next price. The Fidelity RSI guide explains that readings can stay elevated or depressed during a strong trend.

A hypothetical asset can rise from one hundred to one hundred ten and then one hundred twenty while RSI remains high. Selling or opening an opposite exposure at the first elevated reading is a separate decision with its own outcome. A low reading during continued decline likewise creates no automatic floor.

Changing a threshold from seventy to eighty changes which observations qualify, potentially reducing their number. It does not itself prove stronger predictive reliability. If the threshold is selected after observing favorable historical results, retain that selection history instead of presenting it as a rule independently confirmed by the same sample.

Check four groups of settings before comparing charts

First align length and calculation timeframe. Seven periods differ from fourteen, and fourteen hourly bars differ from fourteen daily bars. If the indicator requests another timeframe, identify whether its current input is complete.

Second, align price source, pair, venue and product. A close differs from a price average, and a spot series differs from a derivative or composite index. Third, inspect smoothing, initialization and loaded history. Matching the RSI name does not establish identical input and implementation.

Fourth, identify which plotted value you are reading. A separate smoothing line over RSI can be mistaken for the oscillator itself. An indicator derived from RSI can also use a different transformation or scale. Check labels rather than applying familiar thresholds to a similarly named tool automatically.

Distinguish a live threshold crossing from a completed state

RSI can pass seventy during a candle and close at sixty-eight. An earlier intrabar alert and the final lower reading can both be consistent with the rule. Save time, alert settings and bar status. If the requirement is a confirmed close, test that condition explicitly.

Being above seventy differs from crossing upward through seventy or returning downward through it. Define equality treatment and whether repeated alerts are allowed. Otherwise two experiments can produce different counts while each follows a different unstated condition.

The signal-timing guide explains why closing the chart timeframe does not necessarily confirm a higher-timeframe input. Separate detection, message delivery and any later execution rather than treating the alert’s displayed price as a fill.

Define divergence points and their detection time

A higher price high accompanied by a lower RSI high can be described as a divergence under selected comparison points. Specify how those highs were identified and when each became confirmed. A peak confirmed only by later bars was not fully known at its plotted historical location.

That shape alone does not determine how far or when price must move. Record cases where the movement continues as well as those matching an expectation. Keep identifying the pattern separate from an execution rule so a descriptive label is not presented as a completed profitability test.

Turn a proposed use into a complete test

A statement such as buy when RSI is low is incomplete. Specify threshold, length, timeframe, market, confirmation, assumed entry, exit, invalidation and duration. Without an exit definition, the result of a signal cannot be calculated consistently. Without size and costs, a price move does not describe the account effect.

Assume a hypothetical one-unit purchase at one hundred and sale at one hundred one, with flat illustrative fees of 0.3 on each side. Gross profit is one and net after those fees is 0.4. Another adverse execution difference of 0.5 would turn it into −0.1. This arithmetic does not establish the performance of an RSI rule.

Preserve a later evaluation period not used to choose settings and report sample size, drawdown and net gains and losses. Use the trade journal for timing and outcomes and the watchlist for observations. An understood reading remains one description of price data, while liquidity, supply, custody and future results require separate evidence.
