Good-till-canceled is a time-in-force instruction operating within a market’s rules. A GTC order can remain active after you close the app or change your plan. To manage it, track the quantity already filled, the active remainder and the balance still reserved before canceling or replacing anything.
This example excludes fees, other holds and additional account obligations. A reservation is not a completed purchase.

GTC indicates that an accepted order can remain in effect until execution or cancellation, subject to the service’s operational rules. It does not promise a fill by a particular time or oblige a platform to retain an instruction forever through every market change. The Binance spot definitions distinguish this instruction from immediate execution conditions.
Read four fields separately: pair and direction, quantity, limit price and time in force. The price constrains acceptable executions, the quantity states how much is requested and the time instruction governs the unfilled part’s persistence. Selecting GTC does not make the limit economically attractive or ensure that matching interest will eventually arrive.
Follow a simple balance reservation
Assume a hypothetical spot account holds 1,000 units of quote currency and has no other obligations. You place a GTC limit purchase for twenty asset units at 18 each. Its maximum raw value at that limit is 20 × 18 = 360. If the platform reserves precisely this amount in our simplified model, 640 remains available for new instructions.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Starting balance | No other holds | 1,000 |
| Limit purchase value | 20 × 18 | 360 |
| Initially available | 1,000 − 360 | 640 |
The reservation is neither a trading commission nor evidence that twenty units have been purchased. Actual services may require fees or another reserve and show a different available amount. The Kraken available-balance explanation illustrates how open orders can affect funds accessible for further orders. Inspect the current account details rather than treating our numbers as a universal reservation formula.
For a sell order, the reserved item may instead be a quantity of the base asset. Its displayed market valuation can move while the reserved quantity stays unchanged. Label the unit beside each balance and distinguish ownership of an asset from the portion currently available for another order or withdrawal.
Reconcile six fills and fourteen remaining units
Suppose six units fill at 18, spending 108 before fees. Fourteen remain requested, worth 252 at the limit. Under our assumptions, the quote-currency balance is now 892, comprising 252 reserved and 640 available. The purchased six units are held separately. These numbers describe movements within one account rather than multiple independent charges.
If the fourteen remaining units are successfully canceled before any further execution, their reservation is released. Available quote currency becomes 892 and the six purchased units remain yours. Cancellation does not reverse the completed purchase or recover the 108 already spent. Selling those units afterward would be another transaction, with its own price and fees.
Now suppose two additional units fill before cancellation is accepted. Total confirmed execution becomes eight units costing 144. Twelve of the original twenty remain to reach the target. Replacing the order with another twenty could result in twenty-eight purchased overall, forty percent more than the stated target. Use final fills, not an earlier screen, when calculating a replacement.
Closing the app does not send a cancellation
A server-accepted exchange order generally continues independently of the trading screen. Logging out, deleting the app, hiding the asset or removing a price alert is not an order-cancellation instruction. Check the account’s open orders and verify the relevant final state when you intend to stop an instruction.
Also check whether another device or connected program creates new orders. A fresh instruction appearing after manual cancellation may have a new identifier and timestamp. Stopping local software can prevent its future submissions without undoing instructions already accepted by the exchange. Review both the sending system and the orders actually present in the account.
For a reminder rather than an intended transaction, use the crypto watchlist or an appropriate alert. A live GTC order is permission for an execution that may occur later. Its continued presence should reflect a current decision, not a forgotten note left in the trading interface.
Review old orders across the account
List relevant pairs and subaccounts instead of examining only the market currently open. Record each order’s creation and modification times, direction, price, original quantity, confirmed fills and active remainder. Identify the current purpose: does the order remain intended, has a replacement superseded it, or has the reason for submitting it ended?
Age alone does not establish that an order is wrong. It is a prompt to review its purpose and the account’s present circumstances. Similarly, two orders at different prices may still duplicate the same purchase target. Compare quantities and identifiers against the intended total rather than relying on row position or a colored status badge.
If available funds differ from expectations, reconcile known reservations and investigate the rest. GTC orders are not the only possible source of restrictions. The Coinbase order-management guide shows where that product exposes open-order details and held funds. Use the relevant service’s own records to establish the actual reason.
Cancel, confirm and only then calculate a replacement
- Save the intended order identifier and its current filled quantity.
- Request cancellation within the correct scope, checking any cancel-all action.
- Read the final order state and the latest confirmed fills.
- Subtract all completed purchases from the overall target.
- Verify released reservations and the replacement’s balance and fee requirements.
- Link the replacement identifier to the earlier order in your record.
A delayed response does not mean that cancellation failed or that no more execution happened. Compare server event times and final records. If the product supports amendments, confirm whether a quantity field means the revised total or the revised remaining quantity. With eight already executed, entering twelve can have different meanings under those two definitions. Amendment can also affect queue priority; check the documented behavior.
Maintain one target across multiple orders
Write the target separately, for example, purchase twenty units in total. Associate all relevant order identifiers and unique fills with it. Sum confirmed execution once, then subtract that sum from twenty. Compare the result with the combined outstanding quantities of active orders. This reveals duplicated commitments or a canceled instruction that was never replaced despite an unchanged target.
Check recorded reasons if an order expires or disappears because the market or service changes. A missing row alone does not prove a fill. For an unresolved discrepancy, give support the order identifier, cancellation time and relevant fills, keeping account secrets private. If you subsequently move assets to self-custody, review wallet requirements separately from the quantity still requested on the exchange.
