API keys without withdrawals: Four risks that still matter

Disabling withdrawals restricts an important API function, but does not make a key financially or privately harmless. It may still read account data, place orders or cancel them. Begin with the application's tasks, then grant the supported access those tasks actually need.

What an exchange API credential represents

An application uses credentials to call a service interface and perform permitted actions. A platform may separate reading, trading, withdrawals and administrative functions. Permission names and limits differ by service, account type and API version.

Start with the work the application must do, then map each task to the minimum supported access. Do not create a broad credential first and later struggle to remember why each checkbox was enabled.

An exchange API secret is different from a private key signing for an independent wallet. Both can be sensitive, but their verifier, scope and invalidation mechanisms differ. Naming the credential precisely helps prevent a response that changes the wrong access route.

1. Read access can expose sensitive information

Private endpoints may reveal balances, trading history or orders under the relevant permissions. Lack of transfer authority does not make that data public. Review what the integration can learn, where it stores data and who else can access it.

Permission coverage can also change with product updates. Kraken’s API information exposure guidance explains that available account data depends on the enabled permissions. Revisit current documentation when the application changes interfaces.

A useful inventory connects the application name with specific data categories, not just the word read. Treat privacy as a distinct review question even when the tool cannot move any funds.

2. Trading authority can change holdings and incur costs

A suitably authorized key may create buys or sells or cancel existing orders. Without withdrawing, it can still execute activity you did not intend and alter market exposure or incur fees. Assets remaining on the platform is not proof that their value or composition cannot change.

If permissions include borrowing, derivatives or internal transfers, read their actual scope rather than applying only a spot-trading example. A reporting tool does not need order execution merely because it displays prices and charts.

Kraken’s API key creation guidance illustrates selecting permissions by the intended task. Use current documentation for your actual service instead of assuming the labels or required combinations are universal.

3. Combined permissions can create broader authority

Evaluate permissions together. Address management, withdrawals and account administration can interact in ways a single disabled checkbox does not describe. Ask which actions the application can chain and which independent confirmations the service requires.

For a specific example, Kraken documents the effect of combining address-addition and withdrawal permissions. That is a service-specific illustration, not proof that every platform implements the same controls. The general review is the combined authority actually granted.

Do not add an unexplained permission solely to dismiss an installation error. A technical dependency may exist, but it needs an explanation tied to the application’s real task. Decide whether you need that task before expanding access.

4. The key can outlast the application

Removing a program does not necessarily invalidate its credentials at the service. A web password change may also have a different effect from explicitly revoking an API key. Review the policy and inspect the credential’s active state.

When use ends or exposure is suspected, understand revocation and review relevant logs, orders and operations. Stopping future calls does not reverse completed orders or retract account data already copied.

A status change is useful evidence within its scope. It does not by itself explain everything that occurred before revocation. Preserve appropriate non-secret records so that restricting access and investigating activity remain two clear tasks.

Example: a reporting tool with trading permission

Wael wants a program to collect balances and past orders. Its setup suggests order execution too. He disables withdrawals and assumes the key cannot cause financial harm. That conclusion overlooks the authority to trade.

He maps history access to reporting and order creation to a separate task he does not currently need. If the service supports separation, he establishes appropriately limited access and verifies the reporting function, then invalidates the unnecessarily broad credential through the official process.

He does not place an unwanted live order merely to prove a checkbox works. Documentation, settings, logs and an appropriate official test environment can support review without creating an unnecessary trade.

What IP restrictions and expiry add

A service may restrict request sources or key lifetime. Check whether those controls fit the application’s operating environment, including servers whose addresses may change. A poorly understood restriction can interrupt operation; solving that should not automatically mean opening every source.

A source restriction is not a guarantee if the allowed environment itself is compromised. It supplements protecting credentials and reviewing activity. Keep API values and secrets out of public code, screenshots and support messages.

Store a non-secret key identifier, application purpose, permissions, review date and revocation method in the inventory. The actual secret belongs in the appropriate protected configuration, not the same ordinary checklist.

Review requests to expand permission

If reporting stops and the integration asks for trading access, ask which request failed, what data it needs and which official documentation establishes the dependency. A new optional feature or incorrect configuration may explain the request; greater authority is not the only conceivable response.

Compare account type and API version, then decide whether the extra function is needed at all. Keep the task limited or stop the integration if its requested authority is unsuitable. A sanitized error and permission description can start support diagnosis without transmitting the secret.

If unauthorized activity appears, follow the service’s official incident process and inspect orders, balances and logs within the key’s scope. Confirming withdrawals were disabled describes one limit; it does not answer what happened through the other permitted functions.
