Ethereum Mining After 2022: Check the Network and Reward Type

Ethereum mainnet moved to proof of stake in the Merge on September 15, 2022. Proof-of-work mining no longer produces valid mainnet blocks. An older guide to mining ETH with graphics cards therefore cannot be applied unchanged. Before buying hardware or a contract, identify the current network, activity, produced asset and payment mechanism.

Check the content behind an updated headline

An old article can remain searchable after the technology changes. Its date or headline may be refreshed while screenshots, pool settings and production assumptions remain from an earlier period. Read the operating mechanism rather than trusting a current year added to the title. Detailed instructions can still describe an obsolete arrangement.

The official Merge documentation records the mainnet transition from proof of work to proof of stake. This changed consensus rather than simply introducing another graphics-card setting. An offer claiming to create current mainnet ETH blocks through proof-of-work hashing conflicts with that distinction.

Create a record for an older guide: original date, actual update, network, algorithm, produced coin, source of figures and purpose. Missing fields should remain unresolved. Historically successful settings and numerous comments do not establish that the instructions describe today’s product or network.

Separate the production network from payment currency

A service might mine another asset, sell it and pay the proceeds in ETH. Receiving ETH then does not mean the equipment mined Ethereum mainnet. Ask for a chain of explanation from algorithm and produced asset through reward allocation, exchange price and charges to the asset and network actually received.

Other networks can share history or similar names while using different mechanisms. Do not infer that their output is mainnet ETH or that old equipment retains the same economics. Establish chain, software, pool and data source for each claim instead of transferring one asset’s calculator to another.

Consider a fictional service producing two units of an example asset X, selling each for ten currency units. Gross proceeds are twenty. At a hypothetical ETH price of one hundred, converting twenty before charges gives 0.2 ETH. The initial activity produced X; ETH is the payment denomination.

If conversion costs one currency unit, nineteen remains, equivalent to 0.19 ETH at that example price before further payment charges. A change in ETH’s price can alter the ETH amount even if X production and its sale price remain unchanged. The final ETH quantity therefore cannot alone measure equipment efficiency.

Understand staking as a different activity

The Ethereum staking documentation describes depositing ETH for validator participation in consensus, with rewards and potential penalties. That differs from buying graphics-card hashing capacity for proof-of-work competition. Merely holding ETH in an ordinary wallet does not establish that a validator is operating or protocol rewards are accruing.

Participation through a service or protocol also requires understanding control, software dependencies, counterparties, fees and withdrawal conditions. Renaming an old mining table does not turn its electricity and reward assumptions into a staking assessment. The obligations and sources of rewards differ.

Terminology can obscure the activity. Ordinary storage, protocol staking and depositing assets with an organization that promises a return are distinct arrangements. Ask what action occurs, who controls assets and what rules govern exit. A displayed yield is insufficient without its mechanism, expenses and risks.

Use a product table to prevent mixed comparisons

Offer describesDetails needed
Equipment mining another networkAsset, algorithm, accepted work and operating costs
Mining proceeds converted to ETHExchange price, timing, deductions and payment route
Staking participationMethod, control, fees, risks and exit
ETH custodyCustodian, withdrawal rights and any separate service

The table classifies questions rather than endorsing a product. A device’s operating return cannot be fairly compared with a custody balance or service subscription without aligning the activity. Date each input and keep the value of existing holdings separate from rewards generated by a new activity.

A price increase in existing ETH holdings is a change in valuation, not evidence that an old mining machine produced new ETH. The same distinction applies when an interface combines deposits, rewards and price changes into one portfolio figure. Reconcile quantities and movements before interpreting the total.

Examine an offer selling ETH mining

Request a written identification of the network, algorithm, delivered capacity and its measurement source. Ask whether the operator claims native mainnet production or conversion from another asset. Equipment photographs or one payment each establish only limited facts and do not describe the full operating model.

Collect initial payment, operation, maintenance, conversion, withdrawal, threshold, duration and suspension rules. In a hypothetical example, thirty units of revenue minus twenty-two operating costs and three conversion and payment costs leaves five before hardware and omitted items. Describing thirty as profit would ignore that model’s expenses.

Test lower production, a lower price for the produced asset and a different ETH conversion price separately. Fewer ETH received can occur without hardware failure; a cash valuation can change without a quantity change. Keeping the factors distinct identifies which record or assumption needs review.

If you already own older equipment

Begin with the machine’s current model, condition, consumption, limitations and supported software. Its historical purchase does not establish either current viability or worthlessness. Evaluate documented alternatives from today’s position, separating money previously spent from costs and consequences of a new operating commitment.

Before another use, verify actual compatibility. Past performance on one algorithm does not prove efficiency on another. Match accepted work, energy, fees and downtime over a common interval, including the cost of modification, transport or maintenance. Compare with appropriately documented non-operation or sale scenarios.

An upgrade advertised as recovering the original purchase price is still a new financial decision. Ask for evidence of the upgrade’s benefit and limits. If it repeats the claim of mainnet proof-of-work ETH production, resolve that conflict before calculating payback or buying accessories.

The Merge did not require a secret wallet conversion

The official Merge page also explains that ordinary holders did not need to exchange their funds or wallets for the transition. A historic technical event is not a reason to send assets to someone claiming to activate a new version of ETH. Verify the purpose of any request independently.

Read wallet connections and signatures for their actual permissions, destination and network. A page containing a correct explanation of the Merge can still include an unrelated unsafe request. Do not disclose recovery words or private keys to update a balance or receive rewards.

Maintain five fields: current network, activity mechanism, produced asset, conversion method and amount received after costs. The Bitcoin and Ethereum comparison provides further network context. The useful result is a description of what actually happens today, with a reproducible calculation and clear control over the resulting assets.
