A mining electricity break-even rate is the energy price that makes revenue equal the costs included in a defined model. It does not establish that equipment has repaid its purchase price or that a long contract is suitable. State the period, currency, revenue basis and included expenses before treating the result as useful.
Hypothetical currency units. The result changes when revenue, energy or the cost boundary changes.
BTKWIN.COM · EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLE1. Define the kind of break-even you mean
A narrow operating model might include pool deductions and selected daily expenses. A wider model might add maintenance, hosting or a capital allocation. These models can produce different rates from otherwise identical information. List included and excluded items rather than relying on the word break-even to communicate their scope.
Distinguish a historical calculation from a future scenario. The former needs earned revenue, measured energy and period-specific expenses. The latter requires dated assumptions, sources and alternatives. A present-day theoretical estimate does not become a realized monthly value simply by multiplying it by thirty.
The BITMAIN calculator states that its network-difficulty-based revenue estimate is a reference and actual results may differ. Read any calculator’s field definitions, including fee treatment and dates. Mixing estimated revenue with actual energy can be useful if labelled, but it is not a fully realized result.
Write the formula with units
Subtract included non-energy costs from period revenue, then divide by energy consumed during that same period. Revenue and costs in currency units divided by kWh produce a rate in currency units per kWh. Dividing daily revenue by kW alone omits operating duration and does not produce the intended tariff.
In a fictional example, daily revenue is twelve units, other included costs are two and energy is 100 kWh. Ten units remain for energy, giving 0.10 per kWh. At an actual scenario rate of 0.08, energy costs eight and the remaining surplus is twelve minus two minus eight, or two units.
Call that surplus what it is: a result before excluded expenses. Purchase, installation, financing, taxes or some maintenance might be outside the model. Either disclose those exclusions or expand the model to answer the broader question. A partial daily surplus does not establish complete investment profitability.
Handle zero and negative cases explicitly
If revenue is nine units and other included costs are ten, the model is already one unit short before energy. No positive electricity tariff balances it with the remaining assumptions fixed. A negative algebraic result does not mean an electricity supplier will pay the operator or that a contract allows negative pricing.
If revenue equals other costs, the model has no remaining allowance for energy. If measured energy is zero, division cannot produce a defined break-even tariff. Check whether the device was stopped, data is missing or revenue belongs to another period. Do not replace zero with an arbitrary tiny value to force an answer.
2. Test revenue and energy separately
Reducing revenue from twelve to nine while other costs stay two and energy stays 100 kWh lowers the break-even rate from 0.10 to 0.07. Revenue fell 25%, while the allowance for energy fell 30%, because the other costs did not fall. The remaining margin can be more sensitive than gross revenue.
| Hypothetical scenario | Revenue | Other costs | Energy | Break-even rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 12 | 2 | 100 kWh | 0.10 |
| Lower revenue | 9 | 2 | 100 kWh | 0.07 |
| More energy | 12 | 2 | 120 kWh | About 0.08333 |
| Both changes | 9 | 2 | 120 kWh | About 0.05833 |
These rows are sensitivity tests, not probabilities or market forecasts. A narrow gap between a contract tariff and the calculated allowance can disappear after modest input changes. Show a range of conditions rather than a single comfortable value with unjustified precision.
Separate mined coin quantity from its conversion price. Difficulty and other reward conditions can change quantity while price changes its cash valuation. A reference valuation is not automatically realized sale proceeds after execution costs. Preserve the coin amount, price source and timestamp independently.
3. Expand the energy and billing boundary
A miner using 72 kWh and required support using twelve kWh consume 84 kWh together. With 8.4 currency units available for energy, the inclusive break-even rate is 0.10. Dividing only by the miner’s 72 kWh instead gives about 0.11667, overstating the rate the defined site can bear.
Do not add support twice if the meter already includes it. Fixed electricity-service charges or demand charges also require explicit treatment. They can be separated from volumetric energy costs in this equation, but naming them non-energy costs does not make them unrelated to electricity. Consistency prevents omission and duplication.
For time-dependent tariffs or tiers, calculate the relevant weighted energy price from energy charges divided by energy consumed. The simple average of advertised rates is not necessarily the price paid. Changing operating hours can change the weights, so a historical bill average may not describe a new schedule.
Do not scale every input by uptime
At 90% productive operation, revenue might decline while fixed expenses and some support energy continue. Suppose the base revenue of twelve becomes 10.8, other costs remain two and energy declines from 100 to 92 kWh. The resulting allowance is 8.8 divided by 92, approximately 0.09565 per kWh.
If the interruption is a connection loss while equipment remains powered, energy may not decline as assumed. Use accepted-work and energy records rather than a connection percentage alone. Also avoid an additional uptime deduction when the revenue or hashrate input already includes downtime in its observation window.
4. Keep capital recovery distinct from operation
An explicit daily capital allowance can widen the comparison, but explain its calculation and purpose. Adding three units of capital allocation to the earlier two units of other costs leaves seven from revenue of twelve. Against 100 kWh, the break-even rate becomes 0.07 rather than 0.10 because the scope changed.
For a cash-flow model, avoid charging the full equipment purchase initially and treating accounting depreciation as another identical cash outflow. Project cash flow and accounting profit can be presented separately. Residual value, financing and installation need treatment consistent with the actual question.
An operating break-even calculation does not alone select a purchase or continuing-operation decision. Avoidable costs, existing commitments, contracts and equipment uncertainty matter. The formula describes a scenario; it does not guarantee that a lower tariff remains sufficient for years.
Before relying on the sheet, reverse-check the arithmetic: multiply the calculated rate by period energy and add the included other costs. The result should return to revenue within rounding. Save inputs and dates, distinguish measured values from estimates and use the electricity-cost guide to review the billing boundary.
