Two purchase screens can offer the same asset while producing different net results. Compare total spending and the quantity actually received, then check execution, funding and withdrawal conditions. A small displayed commission or a more detailed interface does not establish which complete route costs less.
Educational amounts, not live offers. All purchase costs are included here; withdrawal is examined separately.
BTKWIN.COM · EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLEDefine the routes before comparing fees
Instant-purchase interfaces generally present a quote or preview with an amount, expected receipt and product-specific charges. An order book instead exposes offers and bids that orders may match, together with execution fees and order conditions. The screen’s simplicity does not establish its complete cost in either direction.
The Coinbase pricing disclosures distinguish spread-inclusive simple pricing from Advanced order-book trading. That distinction does not mean an order book has no gap between its best bid and ask. A product not adding a quoted spread is different from buyers and sellers offering identical prices.
Example one: hold total spending fixed
Suppose two hypothetical routes are available to the same user at the comparison time in the same payment currency. The first spends 100 overall and credits 0.002 net asset units. The second also spends 100 but credits 0.00202. Assume these amounts include every relevant purchase charge and exclude withdrawal for now.
Cost per unit is spending divided by net receipt. The first route costs 50,000 per asset unit. The second costs approximately 49,504.9505. Its quantity is 1% greater than the first route’s quantity, while its cost per unit is approximately 0.9901% lower than the first route’s unit cost. Different denominators explain those percentages.
| Hypothetical comparison | First route | Second route |
|---|---|---|
| Overall spending | 100 | 100 |
| Net asset received | 0.002 | 0.00202 |
| Cost per asset unit | 50,000 | 49,504.9505 approximately |
This method can compare the final outcomes without first reverse-engineering every embedded pricing component. Nevertheless, inspect the breakdown to identify an omitted later deduction or explain a difference. The calculation stops being a fair comparison if one quantity is before commission and the other is already net.
Example two: more tokens can still cost more per unit
Keep the first offer at 0.002 units for total spending of 100. Suppose the other still credits 0.00202 but requires 102 after its payment charges. Its unit cost becomes 102 ÷ 0.00202, approximately 50,495.0495. Despite the larger quantity, it now has a higher cost per unit than the first route.
If commission is deducted from the acquired asset, use net receipt. If paid in a third asset, include a documented equivalent value where the comparison requires complete economic cost, retaining the original fee asset and conversion time. The useful ratio is a consistently defined cost divided by a consistently defined net quantity, not the largest token number on screen.
Distinguish an embedded spread from an additional charge
A product may show an explicit commission while also incorporating pricing differences into its rate. The Kraken Instant Buy FAQ describes a displayed fee and an included spread where applicable. Comparing that displayed fee alone with an order-book commission omits part of the quote’s economics.
Conversely, do not add the embedded spread a second time when dividing the final total by the final net receipt. If 100 genuinely purchases 0.002 after the relevant charges, that ratio already captures the rate applied. A separate spread analysis can explain the outcome without becoming an additional invented payment.
A subscription or promotion can waive one fee while leaving other components. Check its scope, limits and the current quote. For a longer-term comparison involving a subscription, explain how its cost is allocated rather than assigning all of it to one small purchase or ignoring it without comment.
Estimate the complete order-book quantity
The best ask can cover only a small portion of the intended purchase. A larger order may use several levels and obtain a different average. Review a full-size preview or calculate eligible levels under explicit assumptions that the observed liquidity remains available. One displayed price does not commit the venue to fill every unit there.
A limit order may wait or fill only partly. An unexecuted lower limit price is a possible condition, not an achieved purchase result directly comparable with a completed instant quote. After execution, replace estimates with actual fill values, quantities and fees. The order-book depth guide explains weighted-price arithmetic.
Nor does the word limit automatically establish a maker fee. The Coinbase Advanced fee guide distinguishes immediately matched and resting portions. One order can involve different execution roles. Apply the actual account’s current conditions rather than an old advertised schedule.
Use the same funding starting point
Buying with a card and buying with a balance already deposited are different funding routes. Identify where the money starts and include the necessary steps from there. Separate exchange charges from any payment-provider or currency-conversion costs, checking the relevant disclosure or statement instead of assuming a particular external fee exists.
If the payment currency differs, convert using a documented rate and time before comparing nominal amounts. If funds are already on the exchange, you can compare the incremental execution cost from that position while stating that new funding is excluded. Explicit boundaries prevent adding costs that will not occur or overlooking costs that will.
A hypothetical fixed funding fee of two represents 2% of a 100 deposit and 0.2% of 1,000. This shows size sensitivity; it does not justify increasing a planned purchase merely to reduce a percentage. Compare the amount required for the actual task rather than changing the task to improve the appearance of the fee ratio.
Add withdrawal when it belongs to the task
A favorable purchase credit does not guarantee immediate withdrawal. Check funding holds, supported withdrawal networks, minimums and account conditions if the intended route ends at an external wallet. Finishing a purchase establishes one stage, not the availability or completion of the next.
The extra 0.00002 units in our first example can be outweighed by a larger withdrawal deduction on that route. Calculate each expected destination receipt using the service’s actual fee presentation. The transfer fee calculator isolates this stage; the wallet helper supports a separate compatibility check.
- Fix the asset and destination network if withdrawal is required.
- Record funding source, currency and total spending.
- Save net purchase receipt and quote time.
- Calculate comparable unit cost.
- Add necessary withdrawal costs and restrictions.
- Reconcile execution against the saved preview.
If the quote refreshes, use a new coherent set of spending and receipt amounts. Do not combine the cost from one preview with the quantity from another. Choose only a route whose instructions and conditions you understand; neither an elaborate interface nor a simple purchase button replaces this reconciliation.
