Disconnecting a dapp does not revoke every permission: Four differences

Disconnecting an application does not automatically cancel everything you previously authorized. A website connection can end while a token allowance remains recorded on-chain or a signature remains usable under its terms. Identify the permission first, then choose an action that actually changes that layer.

Why an authorization can outlast a website visit

A wallet, application and token contract can manage different parts of an interaction. The connection interface handles how a site interacts with the wallet. A token contract can separately record spending allowances on the network. Closing the page does not rewrite that contract state.

MetaMask’s disconnection guidance explicitly distinguishes disconnecting a site from revoking token approvals. This distinction matters when ending an unused application relationship or investigating unwanted access. The easiest visible action is not necessarily the action that addresses your objective.

Also distinguish permission from use. An allowance may exist without having been used. Funds may already have moved through an earlier transaction. Or the site may have only a connection without any spending allowance at all. Read the relevant current state instead of inferring it solely from the last button you remember.

1. Disconnecting changes the website connection

Removing a site from a wallet’s connection list changes access managed through that connection mechanism. It does not make an address the site already learned secret again or erase records the recipient retained. It is therefore not a comprehensive privacy reset.

If your aim is to stop a site interacting through the wallet interface, disconnection may address that aim. If the aim is to change contract-recorded spending authority, inspect that authority separately. State the intended outcome before choosing the action.

If you use several accounts, inspect which account was connected and which account actually issued an authorization. A successful change concerning one address does not automatically alter another address’s independent relationship with the same application.

2. A token allowance belongs to a contract and network

In a common ERC-20 arrangement, an owner authorizes a particular spender to use an amount of a particular token. That relationship is read from the relevant contract on the relevant network. It does not vanish merely because the site used to create it is closed.

Changing an allowance may require an on-chain transaction and network fees through a supported method. Check the owner account, token contract, spender and proposed value. Similar application names or identical-looking addresses across networks do not make a change on one network apply to another.

Our transfer help tool can organize account and network questions, but its explanation is not evidence that a change has executed. Confirm the actual transaction result and read the relevant state again afterward.

3. A previous signature needs its own analysis

You may have signed off-chain data rather than sending a conventional approval transaction. Its effect and possible invalidation depend on the protocol, whether it has been submitted and the conditions that apply. Do not promise yourself that disconnecting a site cancels all signed requests.

A permit-style authorization can include submission deadlines and nonce rules. An expiry condition may limit when the authorization can be accepted without automatically expiring every permission already established through it. Identify the request mechanism before interpreting what cancellation means.

Likewise, setting a visible allowance to zero is not a universal statement about every other outstanding signature. Use the application’s authoritative documentation for the relevant request. Avoid issuing several unexplained cleanup actions from different websites while trying to discover which one applies.

4. Exposed keys are broader than one permission

If a recovery phrase or private key was exposed, the issue is not limited to a connected application or a token allowance. Revoking an allowance does not restore the secrecy of a copied key. Another party may still be able to sign elsewhere.

Keep this scenario separate from one unwanted authorization with a defined scope. Preserve appropriate public evidence and describe what was exposed. A connection cleanup should not create reassurance before you understand the other party’s actual authority.

Do not enter the phrase into a page that claims to repair all permissions. That would expose a different and broader access route. A focused diagnosis distinguishes a particular authorization from disclosure of the underlying spending secret.

Example: disconnecting after a 1,000-unit allowance

Suppose Rami grants a hypothetical allowance of 1,000 token units and later removes the site from his connected-app list. He sends no transaction changing the allowance. The disappearance of a site name does not establish that the contract value became zero.

Rami checks a trustworthy tool or the relevant public contract data on the same network, identifying the token and spender. If he chooses to revoke, he reviews the prepared operation, confirms execution and reads the resulting allowance again rather than relying only on a submitted notification.

If assets already left, preventing future use does not undo the earlier transfer. Incident documentation and permission changes are separate tasks. Neither justifies paying a stranger who guarantees reversal or providing recovery secrets to a claimed support agent.

Verify the result at the correct layer

Identify the exact account, network, token and spender before acting. Read the initial state and proposed change, then review the transaction content and fee. A pending or submitted request is different from confirmed successful execution.

After execution, read the actual state from the appropriate source. If the operation failed or the interface is stale, do not record it as a completed revocation. Keep the transaction identifier and non-secret error information so the failure can be diagnosed.

Permission reviews should follow actual usage and scope rather than becoming a ritual of clicking every disconnect button. When returning to an application, read any new request instead of automatically restoring previous trust. Our message signing guide explains why different authorizations can survive different interface actions.
