Crypto airdrops: six questions before connecting a wallet

An airdrop distributes tokens under a project’s stated conditions. Receiving units does not prove they have usable liquidity or value. Before connecting a wallet, identify the campaign and inspect the exact request instead of assuming that free means costless or harmless.

A claim can involve more than receiving a token

This guide does not endorse a campaign or ask you to connect a wallet to BTKWIN.

1. Who announced the distribution?

Find the campaign through the project’s established official channel and inspect its connection to the actual domain. A copied logo, familiar account name or message from a community member is not sufficient evidence. Campaign pages can impersonate real projects.

Open the known project independently rather than treating the message’s link as both the claim and the confirmation. Check the exact network and token identity. A genuine project announcement can also be copied into an unrelated page that requests a different action.

Keep the source URL and date. If the campaign cannot be verified independently, mark it unverified rather than connecting a funded wallet to investigate. A public token description should not require revealing signing secrets.

2. What are the eligibility conditions?

Read what actions or records qualify a participant and whether the conditions are final or provisional. A displayed eligibility result is a claim by that interface; inspect how the official campaign says it is determined.

Do not assume every address can claim or that another person’s result applies to yours. Requirements and supported networks can differ. A deadline should be read with its timezone and source rather than accepted from a countdown alone.

Keep eligible, claimed, received and withdrawable distinct. A dashboard promising an allocation is not evidence that a usable asset has reached the wallet. Preserve the relevant stage in your notes.

3. What data is requested?

Identify whether the process asks for a public address, account information, identity documents or another field. Different disclosures create different consequences. Public on-chain history can already reveal relationships, so sharing an address is not equivalent to sharing no information.

Read the stated purpose and relevant privacy terms before submitting non-public information. Do not send documents to an unsolicited private contact who promises to complete the claim. The identity-data guide provides a recipient and channel checklist.

A recovery phrase or private key is spending authority, not ordinary eligibility evidence. A payer does not need those secrets to send an asset to a receiving address. Do not enter them into a distribution site.

4. What permission or signature is requested?

A wallet connection, message signature, token approval and transfer are different actions. Read the actual prompt and recipient or contract identity. Do not assume every signature is a harmless proof of presence.

MetaMask’s approval documentation explains that an approval can let an application access and move a specified token. That authority needs its own review, separate from the campaign’s marketing.

Inspect the asset, spending cap and relevant conditions where the wallet exposes them. If the request cannot be understood, stop and consult official documentation. A time limit does not make an unclear permission safe.

Disconnecting a site should not be assumed to revoke every prior approval. Follow the wallet and network’s official instructions for permission review. If keys were exposed, treat that as a different problem from a routine site connection.

5. What are the complete costs?

Claiming can involve network fees, conversion or another documented expense. A fee paid in a native network asset is separate from the distributed token. Check the exact route and preserve the original units.

Use an invented example: receiving 20 tokens with a displayed value of 0.10 each gives a marked value of 2 dollars. If claiming and later moving them costs 4 dollars under the assumed route, the displayed value does not cover those costs. The token may also lack an executable sale at the displayed price.

The transfer tool can explain stated cost arithmetic. It does not verify a campaign, retrieve a live token value or establish that a balance can be sold.

6. Can you verify the received asset and route?

Confirm the official identifier and network rather than only the symbol. A wallet can display an unsolicited token with a misleading name or link. Its presence is not an instruction to visit the linked site or sign a claim.

Check whether there is an actual supported market and withdrawal route for the intended quantity. A price listing or dashboard valuation is not guaranteed liquidity. The asset evaluation guide separates those questions.

Do not assume distributed units create company ownership, revenue rights or a guaranteed future price. Read the token’s actual function and terms. A free allocation can still have limited or no economic value.

Keep a claim review record

RecordWhat it clarifies
Official source and dateCampaign identity
Eligibility termsWho can claim and under what conditions
Requested dataWhat is disclosed
PermissionWhat authority is granted
FeesWhich assets are spent
Token and networkWhat is actually received

Mark missing answers rather than inferring a favourable result. A useful record can lead to declining the interaction. You do not need to prove that every campaign is malicious before deciding that an unclear request is not understood.

Keep all secrets out of the worksheet. Public documentation and a description of the permission are enough for a review. If a support case is needed, use the established official channel and non-secret references.

Avoid a second loss after a problem

If an interaction seems suspicious, identify what actually happened: a connection, message signature, approval, transfer or secret disclosure. The response depends on that distinction. Do not follow the same unverified contact’s instructions to repair the wallet.

The access and transfer helper organises those cases without asking for keys. It cannot reverse a transaction or guarantee recovery. A person demanding another payment to unlock an allocation is making a separate claim requiring independent verification.

A careful airdrop review leaves source, permission and cost explicit. It does not turn a campaign into an investment recommendation or treat a free label as proof that nothing valuable is at risk.

Keep the original request

Preserve the non-secret wording and source of a request before approving anything. A later change should be reviewed as a new request, not treated as covered by an earlier connection.
