The crypto market: participants, trading and custody roles

The crypto market is an ecosystem of networks, software, trading venues, custodians and users. These roles can overlap, but they do not have the same powers or incentives. Identify who performs each job before assuming a network feature protects an entire service relationship.

One company may provide several layers, while a network can continue operating when one service fails.

Network participants and protocol rules

A network processes transactions according to its protocol and consensus design. Bitcoin nodes validate the blocks and transactions they receive under Bitcoin’s rules. Other networks can use different mechanisms and requirements. Do not generalise one network’s architecture to every asset described as crypto.

Network validation is separate from customer service. A node does not manage your exchange password or decide whether a company credits your account. If a withdrawal is delayed, first identify whether the service has submitted a network transaction. A problem before broadcast belongs to a different stage from a transaction awaiting confirmations.

Developers maintain software and propose changes

Developers can write implementations, fix defects and propose improvements. That role does not automatically give them authority over every user’s assets or every service using the software. Read how changes are proposed, reviewed and adopted in the particular project.

An announced update is not the same as universal deployment. Providers and users can run different versions, and an application can add its own dependencies. When assessing a technical claim, identify the release and the component affected. A protocol improvement does not certify the security or financial condition of an unrelated custodian.

The software roles guide explains why a wallet, node and exchange app should not be confused. Similar screens can hide different functions, especially when one program bundles several roles.

Trading venues organise execution

A venue provides a market or service through which instructions can be matched or quoted. It can offer different products under different terms. Spot assets, derivatives and company shares connected to crypto are not the same instrument merely because the interface presents them together.

Each market has its own orders, prices and available quantities. A chart’s last trade is not a promise for your next order. Read the actual execution rules, order types, fees and receipt format. The market and limit order guide separates price conditions from completed quantity.

A venue can also act as custodian, but the roles remain distinct. Good execution for one order does not prove long-term custody reliability. Likewise, a visible balance and active chart do not establish that every withdrawal route is available to your account.

Liquidity providers and other traders

Buyers and sellers submit instructions based on different objectives and constraints. Some participants quote both sides or manage inventories across markets. Their presence can affect the spread and available depth, but displayed orders can change or be cancelled.

A large visible order does not prove an intention to keep it available indefinitely. Avoid treating an order-book snapshot as a permanent commitment. Quantity, price and timestamp belong together when documenting liquidity.

Other participants do not necessarily share your horizon or information. A trade that suits a business managing an inventory can be inappropriate for a person funding near-term expenses. Market activity is evidence that transactions occurred, not a universal recommendation for everyone observing them.

Custodians manage a different responsibility

A custodian controls assets or signing arrangements on behalf of customers under the applicable terms. Review how withdrawals, customer assets and service interruptions are handled. An account login usually grants access to that service’s procedures, not direct control of its underlying keys.

Self-custody removes some reliance on a custodian while increasing responsibility for signing secrets and recovery. The Investor.gov custody bulletin provides a starting point for identifying those arrangements.

Do not mark custody risk solved because a service advertises multi-factor authentication. That control addresses some account-access threats, while solvency, asset treatment and withdrawal processing require separate evidence. Match each assurance to the specific risk it addresses.

Issuers and application operators

Some tokens have issuers or administrative arrangements that affect supply, transfers or redemption. Read who can exercise those powers. A token moving on a public network does not automatically make its issuer decentralised or remove the need to inspect its obligations.

Applications can add contracts, interfaces, price inputs and other external dependencies. A network can remain available while an application fails or an operator pauses a feature. Trace the dependency that matters to the action instead of blaming or crediting the entire crypto market.

The use-case guide distinguishes technical function, holder rights and control. A working feature does not by itself establish investment value or an enforceable claim against an off-chain asset.

Users remain part of the control chain

Users select the destination, approve instructions, protect access and check records. A technically valid transaction can still be an unwanted payment if the destination was wrong or the approval was deceptive. Network verification does not determine whether a purchase fits your purpose.

Use this map when a problem arises. Ask which stage completed and which remains unresolved. A transaction ID can help inspect network activity, while a service request number can identify an earlier internal step. They are not interchangeable evidence.

Build a comparison around actual powers

Record each participant, role, incentive, relevant terms and point of control. Mark where one company combines several roles and where an external dependency remains. This is more informative than declaring the whole ecosystem centralised or decentralised in one sentence.

The Bitcoin FAQ explains the network’s foundations, but an individual service still needs its own review. Keep protocol claims, market observations and company promises separate. The result should clarify who can act, what evidence confirms each stage and which risks remain with you.

Revisit the map after changes

When a provider changes its custody arrangement, software integration or payment route, update the responsibility map. A procedure that was correct for an earlier configuration may no longer describe the current one. Keep the old record dated rather than treating the change as if it had always applied.
